I know theres some fellow fishermen 'round these here parts. This here's the fishin' thread, y'all. Throw on yer Jack Daniels or Budweiser hat, grab yer tackle box, and shoot the shit about fishin'!
Went fishing sunday night at the pond behind my house. I walked around the back yard for probably 20 minutes or so collecting crickets and grasshoppers for bait. I had about 30 little hoppers of various sorts, but mostly black crickets. I prefer the bigger green or brown grasshoppers though, they have hard shells over the meat of them that makes it a little harder for the fish to nibble them off the hook. Every time I put a cricket on the hook and tossed it out there, it wasn't sitting in the water for longer than 5 seconds before a good strong bite. I was catching bluegill and bream like it was going out of style. I must've caught 30 to 35 altogether. It's an old farm pond thats been stocked with bluegill, bream, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and channel catfish. I didn't manage to find any bass Sunday night, the bluegill population is much higher and they aren't nearly as cautious about what they go after. For bass, the best thing is large live minnows.
Anyway....
I was out there fishing last monday or tuesday night when I noticed that one of the catfish was continuously circling around the end of the fishing dock. The bluegill normally steer clear of the larger catfish like this one. So I set out my line in the path where I had seen him circling. He finally grabbed it. I gave the line a tug to set the hook. When I did, he darted off towards the middle of the pond at which point he snapped my line where the swivel was tied to it. I was fishing again friday night when I noticed him doing the same thing, circling near the end of the dock. I hooked him again, this time I fought with him for probably 2 minutes before he finally bit the hook in half. Keep in mind, I'm using an old late 70's or early 80's Zebco 33 with 12lb line and NO steel leader. Certainly not the best thing for trying to land a monster of a catfish. Sunday night, I used a thicker hook and stouter knots to attach the snap-swivel, hook, and to tie the loop end on the snell. I hooked him again. I fought with him for probably 20 minutes before he finally let up enough to allow me any slack to reel him in. He's probably 2 and a half feet long, 20 pounds or more. Yes, I threw him back. This is actually one of the medium sized catfish. Somewhere in there lurks a 4 footer, possibly even larger by now.

Last thursday, they stocked catfish at the park about a block from my house where I stop after work some evenings to wrangle the largemouth bass. I was out saturday morning after a breakfast beer and a doobie to see if I could get a nice bass and I noticed a lot more people around the lake than usual.
So... I asked em what was up and got the scoop on how many flatheads they'd thrown in and where they were hanging out and biting.
Saturday night with nightcrawlers and a big stinky mackerel in hand, I headed down there with my cooler full of beers a couple rod holders and a chair and I set out my poles waiting for some action.
After a couple of weak bites I watched my smaller pole start bending hard and yanked out a decent sized catfish, only to look up and see my other pole almost yanked out of the holder. I netted the first one, jammed him on the stringer and grabbed up my other pole to find that it had a nice big one on.
I fought with it for about 5 minutes till I had it tired enough for me to get it near the edge and net it, and to my surprise I found that I didn't have a hook in him. Apparently I'd caught the snapswivel on someone else's leader that the fish had broken off, and I fought him in with their hook in his lip.
After a few more beers I got a 3rd medium sized cat and headed for home to cook up some fresh fish fillets.
Here's what they looked like a few minutes before I nailed 'em to a board and skinned 'em alive..

Nice cats, Derv. Whereabouts did you catch them? I still have yet to pull up a catfish bigger than 10 inches outta Lake St Clair, heh. Wish I would've taken pics of the fish my brother and I caught this year, had quite a year. Specially earlier on, I pulled out a sturgeon at the end of this dead end street we always go fishing down. Thing was 3 feet long if not longer rofl. And of course, to 'save' gas we walked all the way there which was like 2 miles away so we had really no way of getting to the nearest store quick enough to go buy a camera to take pictures heh. And I wasn't gunna string it, walk all the way back to drive there etc and risk killing it at all because it's such a prehistoric/beautiful fish. We just stared at it for a good 2 mins to get a nice mental image before letting it go.

I'm out in southern Cali, a little inland from Los Angeles.
These ones were probably farmed up north somewhere like Bishop, and brought down by the truckload to stock the parks and such around my heavily residential town.
The only indigenous fish out here at the public parks are little bass that refuse to get caught and the occasional bullhead.
Some of the carp and bluegill that they throw in survive a few years in the lake, and get relatively big, but all the good eatin fish are from the farm.
There's also a pay to fish lake down by the freeway where they stock sturgeon in the off seasons but I've never gotten one out of it. Only the dumb trout they fill it with when its cold.

lol...Yea I went to one of those farms before where they 'supposedly' had sturgeon in it along with 10,000 trout haha. You didn't have a god damn chance of even getting the damn bait down to the bottom of the pond before a trout would snatch it up so catching a sturgeon would prolly be near impossible.
Yea we have a lot of stubborn fish up here. I'm from Michigan, obviously. Lake St Clair is pretty decent fishing grounds. My brother and I have been fishing for about 10 years now, and just the past 2 we've finally found our own 'hot spots'. Everybody here is a bunch of assholes that won't give you hints on where they have been fishing for 80 god damn years, but instead tell you to fuck off hahahha. So it took us awhile going out in our boat all the time til we finally figured it out. We could go out to our spots EVERY day of the week and pull in over 20 yellow perch keepers. Along with your bluegill, rockbass, the occasional small mouth/large mouth/pike/carp/sheephead. We mainly just go out to snatch perch to fry up, god is it so damn good haha. We just tried small mouth and large mouth bass this year deep frying and it's actually really good. Rockbass is the equivalent to perch, we normally catch at least one or two everytime and fight over who gets to eat it. We also said what the hell and kept a sheephead for shits and giggles and tried it....meh, if you like that 'fishy' taste then you'd love it. I thought it was decent for it being a garbage fish, but it does have a STRONG taste.
*edit* Oh, and if you ever catch white bass, I strongly recommend frying those suckers up. They have quite a unique and amazing flavor to them.
You just fish with worms or you a more 'avid' fisherman?

If I'm fishing the bottom for catfish I'll throw chicken guts, mackerel and a night crawler on the same hook with a fake salmon egg to hold it all on there..
I call it the party ball. Works like a charm.
For the decent sized bass out here, I run a tube or scrounger or medium sized minijig. Sometimes a rubber worm on a floating head works OK. Usually I go hit the local golf course's back 9 water feature if I'm looking for bass, because I noticed some 5 pounders and bigger in there when I was taking a drop one day.
Occasionally I'll get some action on a spinner but I dont like losing nice shiny lures when I catch on some stick or somethin.
Some of the ponds/lakes out here have a bunch of shit on the bottom that people threw out there to make structure, so I end up with traffic cones and shopping carts and such ganking my spinnerbaits. Luckily the golf course's pond is well kept.
For lake trout I've been going out with my soon to be father in law, and we troll needlefish lures on leadcore line and usually end up with a cooler full of fish before lunch.
Other than that I'll pump up a worm some days and go float a bobber after the bluegill/crappie at the park just for shits and giggles. Most of them are small enough to be bass bait so it's more about just pulling something in on a slow day when I go for sunfish.
