I've been going to the local parks lately working the shores for bass in my spare time, and I found one spot where I was getting my hook stripped like crazy by bluegill.

I tied on a tiny treble hook above my bass hook with a lark's head knot and hooked up freshly cut chunks of live nightcrawlers so they had a teency gold deathtrap buried in em.

I couldn't keep a pole in the water for about 30 minutes as I caught scores of the lil buggers, switching between two poles.

I hate fish.

Had a god damn bass or catfish yank my entire fucking pole and reel off the dock beside me where it was sitting. The fucking fish pauses long enough to let my pole sit in the shallow water out in front of me where I can see it, as if it were taunting me to jump in after it. Before I could resolve myself to probably lose my shoes in the mud in order to get my pole back, the fucking asshole took off to the middle dragging my pole behind it.

Fucking pisses me off. A big fat old Ugly Stick, the only decent thick catfishing pole I had, along with an old probably early 80's Zebco 33 reel my old man gave me from his own collection a few years back, all metal and bulletproof, they DO NOT make them that sturdy anymore.

I hope that fucking bastard swallows the hook into his stomach and then gets the line hung on a stump and rips his own fucking stomach out.

it's for that reason that I recommend tying your pole off to something if you're going to leave it unattended.

at the very least, work up a Huck Finn style forked stick pole holder. that's the first thing I do when I go down to the park.
I set my shit down and go scrounging for a couple of good sticks to jam in the bank and make myself a rod holder.

It might not totally stop it from happening but your rod/reel will probably snag on it if they try to drag it off, buying you some valuable time to grab your equipment before it goes swimming.

Usually I would do that. But the rod holder attached to the dock is just a small piece of plastic piping the previous owner nailed up there on the column on the end of the dock. My poles are all the type with the fat pistol grip kinda things and they won't fit down in the holder. If I'm fishing from the bank, usually I DO find a long stick and snap it to where theres a fork on the end, then sharpen the long end of it and stab it into the ground on a slight angle so I can lean my pole against it. I can't really jam a stick into the dock, the boards are screwed down too close together to jam anything between them. Fuckin' stupid me. I used to get one of the plastic adirondack chairs that always sit out there and prop the pole against the back of it since the backs of the chairs are pretty reclined. I figured I was sitting right there AT it, I would be able to grab it if shit happened. I had a beer held up to my lips and was looking back over my shoulder at a noise I heard up in the tree behind me. That's all it fuckin' took and WOOOSH, shit's gone.

that reel sounds like a classic, but the cat was doing you a favor with the ugly stick. look into 'tsunami' for a much better, much more cost-efficient, sturdy pole IF you're seeking a replacement. I've caught anywhere from 1-2lb trout and flounder to 30-40 lb king mackeral/cobia on mine... I have a 10 ball-bearing phleuger(sp) reel on it too. the combo was only 70$, and it is very nice..although I did get a deal on it(the only spinning reel I use in my quiver, all the rest are conventional).

It technically wasn't MY pole either. It was one of my dads old poles that he left over here and I started using when the old Zebco poles handle I had the reel on snapped when I went to cast it earlier this summer. It wasn't in terrific shape. It was pretty old, had that blue-green corrosion shit on some of the eyelet arms coming off the pole, one or two of the arms on two different eyelets were rusted in half. Fucking sucks. I'm a total tightwad and I hate buying new shit when the shit I had worked perfectly fine. Poles with no reels aren't fucking 10 and 15 bucks anymore. They bend you over and break it off in you at Bass Pro and Cabelas. And it's hard to find exactly what you're looking for at WalMart or KMart anymore. They never have a decent selection of line anymore. It's hard as hell to find the old carolina style short U-tail worms these days. Only place I've seen that had any decent selection of them was Bass Pro. I went to probably every Walmart, Target, and Kmart within 40 miles of me, and none of them had jack shit.

I ended up finding the worms at Academy Sports in Athens. Trust me, you need any type of outdoor gear, DO NOT shop Bass Pro or Cabelas unless you HAVE to. I bought my Mathews z7 compound bow from Bass Pro, and I would recommend shopping there for things like that. Their people are a little more experienced and can set your bow up for you better. Had them install me a 3 pin reticle and it's dead on accurate.

caught some lunkers like this one on Saturday.

It was probably 80 degrees out, and clear skies when I went to the park up the road, and within a half hour it was raining lightly and still 80 out so I just kept fishing away getting soaked. Funny part was, the fishing started kicking ass once it was raining. I called up my chick's dad and he came down to share in the action, and we caught for the next few hours without a break.

I got about 10 bluegill of varying size that were trying to strip my hooks, and about the same number of yearling (under 1 ft long) catfish with great coloration. Nice and silver on top, creamy white belly. Nothing was really keeper size other than the painted box turtle I dragged in, but it was nice to actually run out of nightcrawlers from all the bites I was getting and even the littlest of the fish were giving it a good run because of the nice cool influx of fresh water from the rain.

Had a couple larger catfish pick the bait up and move it around, and a largemouth that was teasing me for a while when I was casting a lure, but otherwise it was all small fry.

Yeah, I've heard people say that you can't catch jack shit in the rain, but that's far from the truth. As long as the air temps have been nice and toasty and the waters had full sunlight hitting it long enough to warm it up and activate their appetites, they're still gonna feed. It might have something to do with water depth though. Seems like I've snagged plenty from deeper waters in the rain. I don't have the same luck in the rain in the pond out behind my house. It's kinda shallow and I don't recall ever being able to catch much in it in the rain. Good part about shallows though is that it makes it a lot easier to find the bigger catfish. When channel cats go hunting in the shallow sides of a pond, all you gotta do is look for the muddy parts of the water and cast it in. Their movement will scare off all the little bluegill so they won't be picking your bait off before the cat runs across it.

I forgot to post this pic, I caught around 10 of these that day(last fall)..

That was like, the 4th largest one I caught. We weren't too focused on picture taking when all 3 of us'd have one on at the same time typically.
