Author Topic: Extreme Lag on DM (Read 5223 times)

I've noticed lately there is a lot of lag on the DM server. I cannot move at times due to it, and other players seem to just flicker around the map. I know a lot of other DM players have noticed this. Does anyone know what the cause of it is? Is it just due to so many players on the server? Someone with high bandwidth? Or what?

Check your 'rate' setting is set to 15000, if you're seeing other players warping it's probably due to rate-dropped packets. Otherwise, just a lot of players on the various TS servers.

I do have the impression it is server lag rather than network lag given that sometimes it is choppy yet netgraph looks decent.

Perhaps we need to reallocate to spread players across the physical server.

Perhaps a machine upgrade is in order. I'd be interested in helping out with that.

I have my rate set to 25000, I am on Comcast cable, I think its like 3 Mbits or something like that. Is it possible my rate is too high? Other servers seem to be fine (but of course, there's never anybody on them and TastySpleen owns anyway). The suggestions you made as far as upgrades etc would be awesome.

I had mine set at 25000, it seemed to high.
I set it at 9000, that worked ok, cus lots of server rates were at 10000

But, as suggest by R1CH , I changed it to 15000

so far , so good

There is no difference between 15000 and 100000 since the server packet rate limits you to 15000 by design.

I, and many others, have been seriously lagging on Vanilla in the past month or so. I usually give up and go to Xatrix. It has always been fine regardless of how many players are on it.

Strange... vanilla and xatrix run on the same CPU.

Not sure why one would lag and the other wouldn't...

Hmm wait a minute. Now that I think about it, I think it all began when those knuckleheads started to go "huahuahuahuahuah". You know, the ones who like to get themselves stuck somewhere and then start to hammer on the jump button. That must be it, I'd say kill them all and show no mercy.

Rrright. But I have some questions regarding this lag. If the busiest of the servers that run on the same cpu is lagging (probably Vanilla) then it is likely that it affects the other servers. But could it be possible that somehow it affects the DM server more than it does Xatrix and others because it's more populated?

Oh and quite a while back on vanilla I remember seeing the error "U_REMOVE: oldnum != newnum" when it got busy and choatic on maps like fact3, biggun, koth6 etc. and when there were just too many things going on in wide open areas, however it didn't lag as bad then as it does now. I don't see that error anymore so could this mean the cvar has been turned off?

Cut off the packet used for entity updates if it gets too large. By default, the packet will be discarded if it is too large, resulting in a "freezing" effect on the client. Enabling this will send the partial list of entites, but will cause delta errors such as U_REMOVE: oldnum != newnum on the client. Default 0.

Interesting thought.

vanilla (all of our r1q2 servers, actually) is set to:

//sv_packetentities_hack [0/1/2]
//Now supports sv_packetentities_hack 2 for trying both a compressed packet and then a truncated packet.
sv_packetentities_hack 2

It's been set to "2" for a long time, though.

I'll try hopping on vanilla when it's got a lot of players and see if I can learn anything about the lag. (I need to update to the latest r1q2 server, as well. I understand there's a new 'lag' command for additional diagnostics.)
