I found an interesting read that actually pertains to the conversation at hand, while looking around the net.
It's mostly the viewpoint of an atheist evolution-touting author who sees religion itself as a major self-perpetuating problem with humanity. It is good to understand other's points of view when / if possible although I have found some very hard for me to follow. As a pastor, some might consider me to be one of the more devout TS members but I have / feel no more animosity toward someone with the point of view expressed in the article than I would have with a color blind person who insists there are no colors, red is green or green is red, etc, or a person who cannot hear questioning whether music or sound exists. The reason being our failure to comprehend or experience something does not negate the possiblity of it's existence although it seems to be a human trait to deny & justify why we deny what we can't (or haven't) experienced.

The problem I always end up having is when people refuse to allow others what they themselves insist on having - the right to their own opinion and it's sad it seems to always be that way....

Here's to everyone's inalienable right to have their own opinion - may they always grant others what they want themselves.

Things do happen for a reason.Lets take your "plate of shrimp" example.Some people might say that whoever said plate or shrimp might have gotten this "vibe".And said that word.I agree totally.There are some things about the physilogical part of ourselves I dont think science or "religion" have a clue about.Just like I belive that what you do to other people comes back to you in the end or at anytime, no telling when sometimes,Some people would call that "karma"And some people would call it "What sow, you reap."I think alot of people have these little pieces of info that not everyone else has, and if we could all just sit down, and share it all we might come up with alot of answers.But, alas "religion" and politics are 2 things most people dont like to talk about.Except me they are my two favorites.In some other countrys this could start a civil war.Isnt that reDICKulous.
Point being, no one "religion" or science book has all the answers.I belive the bible contains those answers, or once did, but we are either to stupid or it has been lost in translation over the years.Not to put science down though, theres alot of info and insight there too.

Pieces of the answer are everywhere, we just dont have the time or IQ sometimes to put it all together.Answer to what you say?To all those unanswered questions.

But seriously, thats why religion has so much appeal, it offers justice for those who have wronged against you. You would like to believe it is true, so you do.

Science describes facts, the truth. Religion does not. Religion is just a projection of our ignorance.

The universe is enormously more vast and complex than we can fathom (an intuitive fact and interesting discussion in itself). So, we all have gaps in our understanding.

I'm surprised when people don't want to respectfully analyze their beliefs. If what one believes is right and true, inspection should help reveal it's truth. And, trying to explore and discern what is right and true is a fundamental part of life.

And those who don't fill the "gaps" with a supernatural label, can still find a theme. I mean, I don't think it takes blind faith to appreciate that simply being alive is a wonderful, unearned gift. And that beauty, passion for life, and selfless morality are not dependent upon a belief in the supernatural.

What I'm trying to say, is that life is full of great meaning and the only people who "miss out" are those who don't explore for answers or don't even grow some passion for finding the questions.

i agree with the post above, religion does not allow for independent thinking. i could go on and on but i'm tired, maybe we could get an atheism vs christianity debate going or someinth

i dont think religion is inhibiting in any manner. Most religions have enough depth for an individual to search for answers on thier own. i would agree that relying on someone else to tell you what to think or do is a bad idea. i dont think religions necessarily do that. Some individual churches or temples might, but the basic religions are pretty open for use to people to reflect inwardly on the universe and all it has to offer.

Stereotypes make for weak arguements because they are blanket statements containing no real fact, normally just opinions.

religion may allow you to question a certain faith, but it won't let you change your mind about it. if you read the old testament god commits genocide on those who worship statues of false gods (disbelief in the almighty). if you don't believe muhammad went to heaven on a winged horse you are going to hell.

we obviously have came to a time where we just pick and choose what we like out of a religion. we value things like "don't kill/steal/commit adultery etc.". however, most people do not attend temple/church regularly because generally they just don't want to (which is in fact a commandment - remember the sabbath day, keep it holy).

religion does allow for personal reflections on the earth and universe. if you really investigate scientifically though, we learn the earth is not 6,000 years old. this goes against most religious teaching. of course, we'll say oh well that's insignificant, i can still get my morals from the bible and keep jesus as the lord my savior. well, most people throughout history did not have access to the bible, and all cultures have some sort of foundation of morality, and many made up their own gods. what makes this particular fairy tail more powerful?
