I'm courious - where does the bible teach the earth is only 6,000 years old?

i'm not. i didn't mention the bible .

many people do believe the bible is literally inerrant, however, and that earth was created in 6 days etc.
with this literal interpretation, adam and eve were created shortly after. from what i understand, the number of 6,000 years (roughly) comes from simple historical records of human history. this is accepted from new earth creationists who are christians.

hmm in the old testament God, in Leviticus 20 says to Moses "if a man lies with a male as with a women, both of them have committed an aboomination; they shall be put to death"

interesting. i thought jesus was god too? if god and jesus are two separate beings, boy do they have extreme differing opinions

Jesus was, as far as historical records tell, the son of Mary, and an unknown father that could quite possibly be Joseph..

In most circumstances like this, the woman would have been stoned to death if she was found to be pregnant by a man other than her husband..(adultery was quite a no-no with the jews)

In this case, it seems likely that either Joseph was a very understanding carpenter, or he was actually the reason that Mary was pregnant and he didn't want her to be killed.
Concocting a story about an "angel" visitting her, could have either been a joint effort by the two of them at the time to save her and their love-child from capital punishment. on the other hand, it could very well have been made up after the fact by one of the Apostles in an effort to add some holiness to an otherwise normal aspect of life, considering that the first 4 books of the new testament were not written until years after the alleged death of Jesus. they bear striking similarities to each other because their respective authors were all well-aquainted and they all had access to each others work, so I see no reason that a little lie in one of them wouldn't end up spread to the rest and then widely accepted as truthful due to repetition.

It's not like Matthew, Mark, Luke and John all wrote down their own version of the stories at the exact same time in 4 different places and they all happened to be fairly identical. It also wouldn't be the first time a chick tried to pretend that she didn't know how she got knocked up...

I'd like to have an account of the happenings around the time of the birth of Jesus, from a more central point of view...
Maybe that of MARY!?!?! (you know, the one who was supposedly impregnated by the Holy Spirit and grew the alleged son of god inside of her..)
I find it really strange that there wouldn't be a smidgen of her account of the story, other than the second hand telling of the angel visitting her to tell her she was knocked up... I know it was a male dominated society and she probably could not write, but I find it hard to believe that if such a thing occured, they wouldn't interview the person involved.


If there is some other historical documentation that leads to the assumption that Jesus was the son of the God of Abraham, then I'd like to attempt to cast doubt on it as well.
Anyone know of any other sources?

good points from a skeptic. i think it's pretty clear the silly concept of impregnation without physical contact is a bit absurd. it certainly takes faith (belief without evidence) in a very controversial book. if a person believes in this, it is very likely they were simply told what's true and what's not by their parents as a child.

i was looking forward, however, to an explanation of the differences between the father and the son. to steal from wikipedia: the doctrine of the Trinity states that God is a single Being who exists, simultaneously and eternally, as a perichoresis of three persons (father, son, holy spirit). different branches of christianity have different ideas on this issue. if quakeduke believes jesus/the father/holy spirit are in fact one entity, i would like for him to explain how the father wanted gays dead in Leviticus 20, but jesus simply loves everybody no matter what ("love your enemy").

any possible answers to your questions will probably not be satisfying. this is because the responses would have involved only interpretations of "oh god meant this" or "but if you look here you can see he meant" etc. we wouldn't run into these problems of explanations on humanity if they were not simply made up. certainly, proper investigations on such matters were not performed in ancient times.
