im trying to setup an inexq br400 router for 3 computers in my house
i thought that if i just connected them that it would work
but it seems i have to do more

is anyone here familiar with setting up routers here?

What kind of internet do you have?  DSL or Cable?

Edit:
If you're using DSL you'll need to setup your PPPoE settings in the router.  If you don't know these you can ask your ISP or access your modems login page, usually by typing the default gateway address of the modem into a web browser.  You may also have to set your modem to "Bridged Ethernet mode".

If you're using cable then make sure the router is set to DHCP.

Usually you get into the router with this address 192.168.1.1

Also make sure your PC's are set to obtain IP's automatically.  If you want your PC's to use static IP's then set the outside the router's DHCP zone, or disable the router's DHCP server.

lol, you posted while I was rivising my post.

Since your using cable it's easier.

Login to your router at 192.168.1.1, and set your router to use DHCP.

Sometimes you may have to clone the MAC of the network card that the cable modem was initialized on in the router.

Are you haveing problems with all the PC's connecting to internet?  Or all the PC's seeing each other?

my own computer is not on the router
so i have to use a computer on it to connect to the router?

i did notice the computers were connected to the net some how, as it showed in my network places
but just couldnt open webpages and such
im not sure if the pcs can see each other

btw, how would i go about cloning the mac address, and how would i determine the netwrok card initialized on the router

Could be a DNS issue, are the DNS server IP's set in the router or set to obtain automatically?

heh beleave me i tried to find some documentation for this, but the company's site doesnt work heh

no, i have a switch connected to the cable modem, which my computer and another computer connect to, then the router connects to the switch
which has 3 computers connected to it

reason im doing this is that my isp charges 20$ cdn per ip, and its getting expensive
so we are going to have 3 ips, 2 for the computers on the switch. and one that will be shared on the computers on the router

i was actaully planning to do this later tomorrow, so ill post again if i have any problems

I think we have the source of the problem there.  The cable modem is on a switch 

Why not do this.  Pay for one IP and use the router to share access, it should work that way.

cus i refuse to use routers. they are evil it creates a shit load of problems
if i didnt have to, i wouldnt be using it now

Well if it's been working with just the switch then it must be ok on that part.

Let's take a look at the connection between the switch and router.

Here is the way it should be connected:

Cable modem connects to a port on the switch, first two PC's connect to the switch, switch connects to the routers WAN/Internet port, second two PC's connect to the routers LAN ports.

If you get a static IP (i.e., doesn't change) from your ISP assigned to you it should be setup in the router connection setup page.  If you get a dynamic IP (i.e., changes from time to time) then the router should be setup to obtain an IP with DHCP.

The two PC's on the router should be set to obtain an IP automatically, this will have the router assign the two PC's an internal IP (e.g. 192.168.xxx.xxx).

Most routers I've dealt with have the default password set to "admin".

Ok, according to portforward.com the default password for your router is blank.  No password.  If that don't work then, the guy you got it from changed it.
