Quake 2 remastered discussion - news and rumors
« on: June 25, 2023, 10:59:28 AM »
"South Korea leaks the existence of Quake 2 Remastered a mere 2 years after it leaked the existence of Quake 1 Remastered"

https://www.pcgamer.com/south-korea-leaks-the-existence-of-quake-2-remastered-a-mere-2-years-after-it-leaked-the-existence-of-quake-1-remastered/

Well this is certainly great to see if it really does come out! I wonder what the implications of this are for the community and how mod friendly it may be, and just what exactly this remaster will look like.

if the Quake 1 remaster is anything to go by, then id guess it wont be compatible with any of the Q2 ports etc, so highly doubt you could use it to join any TS servers, altho that would be great if it was possible.

I think unfortunately the developers won't bother trying to make the new port compatible with vanilla servers. A pity, really... That sucks!  :-\

https://youtu.be/gHxH61UshHk I am glad this looks extremely faithful to the original aesthetics! Also, no words can describe how happy I am to see they are adding the N64 levels, its the version of the game I grew up with before getting into the PC version, it is quite unique and overlooked!!!

Aye, that's the thing I'm afraid is 99% likely to be true. Time will tell just how easily moddable it proves to be.

Well so far a few levels in, I am finding this to be a very pleasantly unique experience that still feels like the Quake 2 I always knew and loved, just better and with more depth to it! The only thing so far I have noticed that really grates on me is that annoying weapon switch sound... I don't know why they felt THAT was necessary but hopefully they'll patch in an option if it doesn't already exist somewhere.

They probably want us to rebuild the Q2 scene around this updated version, i don't blame them tbh, if they've fixed everything we need/want to be fixed then it's probably the best thing for the Q2 scene in the long term - unless they've refused to provide support for older/simpler stuff that we're still working with, if that then fuck them, we'll just cannibalise their shit and move on.

From what i've seen/heard so far i already suspect it will end up being too deficient in too many important areas.

I'm very concerned about multiplayer in the remaster version.

It seems that you can only do 3 things:
  • Multiplayer with Steam's network
  • LAN on your own network (No chance to put any IP)
  • Local with shared screen

If you try to use connect command through console, it will show you the following:

Code: [Select]
note: command deprecated, use kexmultiplayer command instead
usage: connect <server>

It seems that it doesn't contain anything that would be useful for making private servers.
Classic Q2 will not die, Remastered Q2 would probably be cannibalised for private servers like those on tastyspleen.

EDIT
Apparently it should be easy to use old mods or adapt them, the new Q2 Remaster seems to runs on top of old Q2, mostly because the models folder is in the old /baseq2 and not in /rerelease/baseq2

I don't know if anyone has the answers yet, but I have a few questions about the re-release that I was hoping to get some info on:

1)  Is OpenGL supported with the re-release or only software mode?

2)  Can you use an autoexec.bat on the re-release?

3)  Is there a listing of the new console commands anywhere?

Thanks for any information.

Was looking over the readme of the source code and found this under the Player Movement section:
Quote
Because a lot of movement quirks in Quake II were indirectly caused by the compression, these behaviors were retained. Trick jumping is now an explicit movement type, to allow for things like the Mega Health box jumps to still work. Some fixes were made, like jumping higher below the 0 z point of the map.
I guess that explains the inability to climb crates in q2dm8/dm6 rail

There is quite a few things wrong with this remaster here is a few things i find wrong.

Multiplayer is locked behind  ''DRM'' login on steam and gog galaxy with no real dedicated server support and limited to 16 players.

Cannot deathmatch on single player levels they only wanted to include multiplayer specific maps which isnt true to original games.

They attempt to be accurate to n64 quake 2 version by not allowing crouch the game even has text pop up when you hit the crouch button ''quake 2 n64 does not have crouch'', but the explosions in the n64 quake 2 content arent accurate to the n64 version for the rocket launcher and they include hand grenades in the n64 content which isnt accurate either it has no hand grenades  it only has the grenade launcher it's contradictory accuracy, they might aswell have allowed you to crouch since its not even really accurate in the first place.

Also they changed certain sounds like footstep sounds on certain surfaces and stuff.

The best thing to do is port over quake 2 n64 to the vanilla game to run on source ports like yamagi or q2pro and host server running the exclusive 10 multiplayer maps from n64 game.

Thanks for any information.

https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Quake_II_Enhanced

No list of console commands there yet, but a little more info .There does seem to be support for dedicated servers for other enhance Q2  clients I'm guessing.

You can type "cvarlist" in console and it will list all commands (you probably know this already) but no description of what they do, though you can usually figure it out.

I believe it is D3D11 and Vulkan. No software mode :(

It's an interesting remake. I like it.

Can't condump. Not supported. cvarlist works but you can't even redirect it to a file for reference.
I prefer q2pro's descriptions when you use a cvar without arguments.
