Another Quake 2 package - nQuake2
« on: December 26, 2012, 01:36:15 PM »
nQuake2 is another Quake 2 installer that brings you Q2Pro, Action Quake II, CTF and Eraser bot in a neat package.

The project is developed by me. You are welcome to enter your suggestions for improvements in this thread.

The project webpage is www.nquake2.com

Quote from: Original post
Hey guys!

I decided to make a Quake 2 version of my QuakeWorld package nQuake.

It's come a long way towards being finished, but I need some help from you guys with the finishing touches.

What I'm looking for is this:

1) A decent configuration. I would like to get a DISCUSSION on the "must have" configurations that will be needed for a new player. The configuration should be competitive but easy to use. Useful aliases that don't over-complicate things are welcome. I like "behind the scene" aliases that are complex in code but simple to the user.

2) High resolution textures that aren't HUGE. I use jpeg textures for nQuake (1) and they work fine. I would like something like this for nQuake2. Not just textures for the maps. Models too, please. If they exist.

3) HUD textures, and instructions on how to use them ;-)

4) Need help compiling the latest Q2pro client from sources. I have no idea how to do this. nQuake2 will be Windows only so I will only need a Windows binary.

Any help is appreciated!

(Update: you can try the current version out here: http://nquake.com/2)

I am aware of the following issues:

1) You get file errors when trying to connect to an AQ2 server.
2) The high resolution textures don't seem to work. Help out please.
3) The configuration file is not even half done yet (I have only begun tweaking the binds). This is where I need your help.
4) The Q2pro client is not the latest git version. Help :)
5) The installer graphics aren't 100% done yet.

The process of tweaking the package to be *perfect* is a very long process. Please don't judge it until it has had time to mature.

Welcome, empezar!

Quick note to save time if anyone's wondering, many of the pros & cons of r1q2 vs. q2pro have already been discussed here:

Thanks!

Also, I would like a short description of Action Quake II that I can put in the installer (I'm making it an optional download).

There have been many quake2 start packs. but having you do one would surely make it official. Seeing how successful nQuake is, this will be an honor.

Though i'd be against using Q2Pro, R1Q2 really is the client most used by the community After seeing the discussion between you guys on quakeworld.nu, i was not aware things were this way and it has made me question my use of r1q2 now :)

Could you be more specific about what you view differently after reading that thread?

I was going to stop responding there to the anticheat and GPL discussion, since it had become off-topic to the nQuake2 installer itself. But I'm concerned about allowing some of the incorrect information espoused by one of the posters to go unchallenged.

What are the top 10 most likely places where pak0.pak (full version) can be found?

Anyone know where Quake 2 bought via steam stores its pak0.pak?

Hello,
Since we're on the subject of Quake 2 Starters, maybe this will help you from reinventing the wheel, here's the one I made a while back, I've only added the logo recently:
http://www.netdoo.com/wodx/q2s.zip

It gets you the same exact files as q2s, so basically all you need without getting bloated, and does it from original files it downloads from the official sources. I believe in keeping things simple and compact, but you can easily add more download sources for bright skins, hd packs, clients, mods, configs or whatever, by simply editing the xml.
I've also got a quake 3 starter, that works on the same principle, that will be available at the url below, once I get back from the holidays:

http://q3s.tastyspleen.net/

Cheers,
Ruiner

heres my tdm binds

http://forum.tastyspleen.net/quake/index.php?topic=17785.msg178595#msg178595

can give you my whole config if you want, though it is specific to r1q2 so you would have to modify it :) no one here thats good really uses q2pro... so... good luck finding a competitive config built for it

far as other things go, really just want bright skins, high res textures, and maybe a better hud (with q3 icons, brighter letters) and that should be it... people can go in later if they want alternate sounds and stuff

personally, biggest alternate sounds I like are q3 armor sound, qw mh sound, qw rocket sound, and ricochet sounding rail shot :)

there are other starter packages you can look into for resources, ely's q2 starter on the main tastyspleen page, and jehar's q2kicker to name a couple good ones done here at ts

best thing you can do to get help here is to ask for something more specific, and generally some one will have the resources to help you out :) otherwise things get looked over and forgotten quickly as people go off on tangents

If we forget about the anticheating module (which the QW community abandoned long ago due to GPL issues and the false sense of security it brought), what differences are there between Q2pro and R1Q2? Are the commands very different? Is Q2pro lacking in some areas? Can I use a R1Q2 config in Q2pro without problems?

things like location tags in chat binds will be different, unless you use things like the mod specific tags for opentdm like %L for location

as well as specific variables to a renderer or client will be different

you are better off making a config from the ground up, and pulling in bits and pieces of what you would want :)

Are there any good bots out there except for eraser bot (which is the only bot I remember)?

Any of them come with a bit less files, or at least more "pakable" than eraser?

IIRC the Gladiator bot was better than Eraser bot. Not sure on the size of the files.
