35 GB in around 300 000 files, 100 MB of demos, plus extra 3 GB of various high-res textures which are in another directory. Over 10 000 maps, which were ripped with a script from different sites, some of which no longer exist.  :|

I hope you have backups! I didn't, sadly, and so I've probably lost a lot of maps which, yes, came from sites that no longer exist. :(

Now up to 13.6 GB...

huge storage maybe awesome but i rather have it in solid state. IDK if i got it right bout HD, the bigger the capacity the more sensitive/ prone it is to data loss.

Externals are slow (more then fast enough for Q2 though) and solid state's can wear out fast when you're erasing/writing a lot.

Video people I know report no issues with TB+ size drives for doing video work so I'd say they're safe.    While the theory that "large drives can be more prone to data loss" is kind of true, the bigger the drive = the more stuff to loose.  They were saying the same thing with 200mb hard drives (and 20mb's I bet) over a decade ago!  :)

3.8 GB or something. If I knew which textures were used for the tourney maps then I'm sure it would only be around 1 GB.

I have had corruption issues with external hard drives before - as well as flash drives. Although it wouldn't be a bad idea to back up my stuff onto one.

Drives of all types fail, and as this Google study of 100,000 drives over a period of five years discovered, seemingly intuitive factors like the drive's temperature or a heavy sustained workload on the drive didn't correlate in the way one might have expected to failure rates:

http://storagemojo.com/2007/02/19/googles-disk-failure-experience/

Also, they found drives were more likely to fail in the first 3 months of use, than in the remainder of the first year.  So if your drive makes it past the first few months, chances are good it'll last a couple years; etc.

I'm using http://www.hdsentinel.com/ to periodically perform a non-destructive read/write/read test on my external backup drives, to verify whether they've started to go bad.  The test takes about 32 hours to run on a 2TB USB3 drive.

The test gives me some confidence that the drive hasn't begun to fail slowly.  Of course there are also cases when a drive will fail instantly.  So I'm obviously depending on an instant failure not happening to my internal drives and my backup drives at the same time.  (If a massive power surge wiped out the internals and externals, then I'm hosed... I keep telling myself to start making off-site backups of my most critical data.)

Don't forget when the drives  goes bad it might not be the magnetic drive itself, but the control board can go too.

Happened to me with my P200-mmx.  It was suggested by the guy I bought the machine from we try replacing the control board on the drive with one from a duplicate drive, and it worked.  :)

Same thing with my dad and an external: the controller on the external went so we hooked it up to my computer (SATA connection), put the external back together and got a free replacement at Circuit City.

Externals might have issues I guess.  TBH I just saw that price @ walmart the other day, didn't buy it.  I usually use flash drives for backups.  64 gig ones are fairly cheap and can back up a lot of shit in a decent amount of time.  Helluva lot better than the old method of backing things up (burning onto CDs). :ohreally:

BTW not sure if the discussion was talking about internal HDs or not, but my internals last for fucking ever for some reason.  I had one that lasted for over a decade in an old ass machine.  Acer pentium 1 133 baby.  768 megabyte HD.  Old school.  :>

i dont trust flashdrives anymore

i had a bunch of notes and pages of written work on a flash drive, and only made a backup about every other day to another flashdrive.... one day windows decided to just drop the file table after safely unmounting it

it is on my todo list to build just a little file server for my house and throw a few terabytes into a raid 5, and just cron my computers to rsync every week, roll backups for a few weeks

as long as you have good redundancy on the file server and for the network, you are fine.... and i love building redundant systems and networks :)

Cloud storage is more affordable and far more reliable than anything you could do in your house.

But tell us, how many redundant filesystems and networks have you built over your vast years of experience?  :dohdohdoh:

This subject was done before,  even if it was misspelled :)

http://forum.tastyspleen.net/quake/index.php?topic=2061.msg29861#msg29861

Mine was 9 gig in 06,  up to 25 gig now.

My main one anyhow,  I have one just for mapping, and probably at least one more out there from trying out install packages.
If you add all the q2 movies I have laying around I dunno how big it would be...   demos only account for 3 gig, and thats only from 08 to now.
