could be a file inside a pak such as a sound or a texture could drive anticheat nuts to a point where both ac and r1q2 crash though, so you might want to look into that

I do notice when i use the chaingun my r1q2 client flickers in the background as in i can see very faint lines through it as i am using the chaingun. would would cause that? its stock sound for that weapon too i am using

check for updated drivers for your sound card.

if you are using updated nvidia drivers for your video card, try rolling them back to the ones that came on the disc with it.


also, now that you deleted your restore points, run another AV scan to make sure all those oddities are gone, and then turn system restore back on. (you might need it someday as it's one of few ways to get regular registry backups automatically)

most of the time that I've seen that sort of .dll come back in a restore point with an AV scan, it had to do with a trojan on the system... quite often a stupid vundo/virtumonde infection, usually hiding in the windows/system32 folder masquerading as something potentially useful.

afaik, system restore shouldn't be touching your q2 folder so those .dll backups may not have anything to do with ac, but they may be part of your overall problem.

This looks very familiar, I'm pretty sure these are in fact the previous anticheat dll's that your scanner had detected in your recyclebin;

Most people just delete anticheat.dll to the recyclebin when they are having problems with it. Then later on when they want to go and _restore it they click on the file (still in the recyclebin) and immediately their viruscanner picks it up.  Whenever you move the .dll out of your quake2 folder the alarm bells go off when you try to click the file and move it back. You'll end up with exactly the same type of A0xxxxx.dll files in the system restore. At least with AVG and Avira it seems.
(If you want try it without AC maybe instead of moving it to the bin you could just move it to a temp folder inside your quake2. As long as it's not in Q2's root it shouldn't be loaded.)

But even if it's in the Exceptions list, it looks as if your virusscanner and/or windows firewall is still not totally convinced that anticheat.dll is secure and this could be the reason for the shutdowns of the game. There should at least be a mention in the Event logs that the application r1q2.exe was stopped.
(I run Windows7 and AVG 2011). Last week I had my r1q2 close to desktop once with no visible error message so I hope this isn't going the same way because I've never had any real problems with AVG + anticheat before. This was in the system event log:

Maybe it would be wise to just check and redo the Exceptions list in my AVG after the big 2010 -> 2011 update. I'm going to do that first I guess.

Jinx,  my quake crashed twice today

on t4 both times.
takes me all of about 3 seconds to restart the game and type connect east.tastyspleen.net:27930 though.

Might just be something about t4, didnt happen on rails/mutant/vanilla/dm,  and I spent more time there I think.

i check my sound and this is what i have

Realtek High Definition Audio

no idea why it has 4 nvidia ones there, don't even know what anvex is, and before i installed my nvidia card it was only the realtek HD.

if you can get to the device manager window, try right clicking on those entries under "sound, video and game controllers"

if they have the option to disable them, do so and play with the nvidia ones disabled to see if there's any change.
Leave the realtek drivers alone tho..

if there is no change, (you still get crashes) go back and enable them again.


acer: the path to the recycle bin stuff is usually something like  "c:\RECYCLER\S-x-x-xx-xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx-xx" where the x numbers reflect the user Id that you'd see in the registry for each user's profile/settings.

afaik, the _restore ones are all win xp system restore points.

if for some reason the anticheat.dll was placed in the windows/system32 folder it may have been backed up into a restore point at some time in the past and then snagged by the AV scanner because it didn't fall under the exclusion for a file named "anticheat.dll" in the q2 folder.

i have disabled them to no effect, i have also just updated all audio drivers and my r1q2 still has lines flickering through it when i use the chain and nailguns. i wish i could record it on fraps but i tried doing so and when played back it doesn't show for some reason

do a full q2 install first, then add r1q2 and play a bit.

then add your config and play a bit

then add your paks and play etc..

it could be something in your config or a bad sound etc.. not rly sure tho as I've never seen that problem

ok did a clean install and i have discovered it is r1q2 itself, but i hadn't had this flickering till recently, so maybe it could be a setting on my graphics card thats causing it? i have no idea. but i will give apr1q2 another shot, just need a list of cvars cause i have been told the commands for things are differen't like gl_colouredlightmaps ect

Yes I know that's what so weird, but I still think it has to do with it. Try it out for yourself with an active AV, just delete the dll and then restore it from your recyclebin.

Open the nvidia control panel and make sure that a few things are set in the "manage 3d settings" tab:

threaded optimization - off
triple buffering - off
vertical sync - use application setting
multi-display - single display performance mode

two others that you should check are anisotropic filtering and antialiasing

for testing purposes, set them to off or application controlled and try playing a bit.
if theres no change, turn them back to 4x aniso and 2x antialiasing or w/e they were.
