Ubuntu.
« on: October 05, 2010, 04:53:56 AM »
Has anyone ever played around with it?  It's a operating system that alot of people opt for over the more glorified OS's, and it's free.  Was thinking of dual booting it on this laptop due to the possibility of better driver support, any experiences with it?

reaper and realistic both use it I believe

Quadz has referenced it -   "Ubuntu is Swahili for "There is no windows here"

I've never had problems with XP, otherwise I would probably have looked into it

very easy to use intro level linux distro, but it is linux so if thats not your thing then dont go for it

quite a good and very powerful operating system that will take care of nearly every desktop need you have except for gaming... and if you want to stick to games like UT quake and doom then they all run native on linux anyway :)

i know jehar runs it too, i used to run it awhile back but havent for awhile... been meaning to get another linux box up and running :/ considering going with arch though, quite a bit harder to use but a lot more stream lined and would be more fun to play with lol

cool thing with ubuntu if you do decide to run it, if you need a program that does say... plays mp3's :) you can open up the synaptic package manager, search for "mp3 player" select one, hit apply, it will download and install it for you, no restart required 99% of the time for anything really, updates are quite frequent but easy and hardly ever require a restart... linux really is superior to windows, but it may be hard to get used to at first

and if you really want it, the eye candy in linux puts both mac and windows to SHAME lol DESK TOP CUBE FTW!!!

I have been using it since this past summer. I dual boot it with Windows Vista. I really like it a lot. One of the cool things about it are the many applications you can get on here. Aside from that, I think it has opened my mind to Linux a lot. I grew up in a WINDOWS family that favored it to the core. I guess I'm the rebellious one :D Anyway, I only use Vista when I go on iTunes to sync all my iPod stuff. Other than that, Ubuntu has become second nature for me. As in, I turn on my computer, and when I sit down, I am waiting to log in on Ubuntu instead of Vista. It's also a pretty fast operating system. You'll just have to see for yourself :bump:

I must also add, it's much easier to change things on here compared to windows...or should I say...Winblows

...btw, you can always try it out on the LIVE CD! It won't even install anything!

I don't use it as a desktop but it definitely seems like the best OS for certain things in my opinion.  Everyone values different things, but this OS saves times by having more sophisticated packages where you don't need the most recent versions of software.   Debian is pretty much the same, so I would go with Ubuntu or Debian but not for a desktop due to incompatible software.   Ubuntu has made the most headway into the desktop market though.

you dont need to boot into windows to sync your ipod with itunes, itunes will run pretty good in wine and there is a lot of guides to get that working, OR you can just go with one of the open source alternatives that work... i know suse has one pre-installed that will sync your ipod just like itunes, no clue what the name of it is though or how well it works

I recently found out about Virtual Box. Apparently you can run Window's on there like it were a regular program on Linux.
