DM Server suggestion

How about a DM server configuration that is similar to Fusters in the UK?  :lol:

1) No Quad
2) No Invul
3) No Powershield
4) No BFG
5) Maximum of 5 grenades in ammo (to prevent spam)
6) 10 minute map timelimit
7) All-time highscores displayed at the end of each map
8) Maps DM1 - DM8
9) Map voting options
10) Chase cam that shows who is chasing who and also a more zoomed out 3rd person view.
11) A 12 player limit

it works on a rotation. one full rotation from dm1 to dm8 won't have invuln and quad, the next rotation will. i have also suggested in the past that DM be set to a 10 minute time limit because it gives us hpb's a chance to get into the game more rather than have some lpb on steroids win the map in 2 minutes

You must be joking right?

The only people who would object to a 5 grenades max ammo are grenade spammers. You know the ones who load up with them and hide up on ledges for cheap frags. Maybe you're are one of them?

This is not my ruleset. It's been tried and tested for years over at Fusters.

Also a good idea would be a sightly longer pause (10 seconds) at the end of each map to digest the scores. Also a pause for a sip of drink is good too.  ;D

Grenades are an item that give freshly-spawned players a chance to defend themselves. They tend to lie all over, and they do 120 damage which can keep some railer from constantly chasing people down and railing them. Anyway, the q2dm1-8 maps are hard to grenade spam very many kills. Maybe we ought to limit railguns to a maximum of 5 rails since I've seen a lot more people camp with railgun than with grenades/grenade launcher.

Well the 5 ammo max on grenades is debatable.  ;) There really is no need for more than a max of 5 at a time. It gives enough spamming ability without being a joke.

The main point was to suggest a DM setup which removes lame stuff like quad, invul, BFG and powershield. Also to limit player count to 12 and include a highscores and a 10 minute timelimit.  8)

well the setup currently running has dm1 to dm8 without quad/invuln then dm1 to dm8 with quad/invuln, and then theres the mymap function with 5 maps..
This is very nice imo, everyone gets what they want this way..

There's player statistics, which I think are better than the highscore feature you get with OpenFFA.

Spam is fun. q2dm7 wouldn't be fun to me without the spam. Generally I dislike that map.

The 5 grenade limit wouldn't make a lot of difference on DM7 anyway.

Even though stats are better than high scores, good players will flock to the server to try and get on the top 10.

Also i've noticed there are players on Tastyspleen DM who simply cannot get frags without grenade spam or BFG. These players need to be encouraged how to learn and develop some skills.

I basically agree with everything you list here Frank.  I had never thought about limiting the max number of grenades you could carry to 5, but that's a wonderful idea.  Grenade spam is a big annoyance to me; there's always someone in the rail room, on dm4, tossing grenades non-stop down the chute.  Sure, it's possible to rocket jump in there and take them out, but when I'm in a competitive game, and spawn near the yellow armor close to rail room, what are the chances I'm going to make it to the RL untouched to take out that spammer?  Lots of novice players don't even know how to RJ into the rail room anyway it appears.

Always a nade spammer on DM1 up on the catwalk on the way to upper RL, spamming nades into the lower RL area.  The player Stick (now known as Stfuakma or something lke that) has many wins by exclusively camping the lower level of DM3 by spamming the GL room, and the room below RL with nades.  DM5 isn't too terribly bad.  DM6 or DM7 not that bad IMO either.  DM8 has a fair share of grenade spammers too, which works well given its multi-level design.

Maybe we can encourage the Mage Warehouse server admins to change their server to what you propose.  It used to be DM8 only with a 20 min time limit and without any uber powerups or BFG.  I LOVED playing there.  It attracted most of the better players since cheeseball spam tactics weren't very effective there.

Oh, I don't think I'd want to lower the player limit though.  At least not on the tasty servers.  If there was a 12 player max limit, it would be very hard to get on.  It's very often at the cap of 16 anyway.  I would however like to be able to have an auto-kick for players that idle in spectator mode for extended periods of time.

To be honest Tastyspleen DM was quite an eye opener after years on Fusters. I'm seeing stuff I haven't seen for probably over 10 years lol.. Things like quad timers, mass grenade spam, room/lift camping (very annoying!), BFG spam, even people crouching over the lava tunnel buttons in DM3!

Well the reason I'm here is that Fusters has been getting pretty quiet lately when I play. I'm also moving to California early next year and I'll be looking for a new DM home.

Of course I am new around here so hold no weight when it comes to server suggestions, but it does seem like the DM8 Warehouse server is fairly quiet and could be used. One thing I'd definately recommend is not to call it DM2. It would need its very own unique identity.  :thumbsupup:

Also feel free to take a look at Fusters (195.234.10.198:27910) when you get a chance to see this exact server setup in action.

As for the player limit, I can see what you mean. Some maps though are just plain ugly with 16 players on but I guess that can be looked at if it takes off.
