There is always braking and steering capability left in the vehicle if the engine is off and the vehicle is moving. It's a safety feature in case you simply run out of gas somewhere and need to steer off the highway or whatever, and brake to a stop. Had that happen to me in the 70's when I was on the hiway and suddenly found the steering really heavy and checked the dash. Because the engine is no longer running the 'boost' functions, the brakes and steering will be twice as heavy, but still functioning. I believe this assumes the key is still in the ignition in RUN position.

Just got off the phone with my 92 year old mother. Once a week she goes to an exercise rehab place to help her walk better. This morning, one hour before she arrived, a Toyota lost control and crashed through the front window of the rehab place. No one was hurt and the driver said the gas peddle stuck. Now my mother is afraid to go out anywhere and she is worried about me driving to work everyday. LOL

I'd like to know why they spent so much time focusing on the body and logos. Is it a test video or a Toyota Prius commercial? Where's the accelerator-down, transmission in gear, stand on the brake test? The theory of runaway acceleration was that the car was unstoppable because the brakes could not stop the powered acceleration.

Qwazy...I don't think the test video was some PR cooked up by Toyota. That seems to a standard television shoot of the story showing the product in a TV mode.

As far as the Cali guy, I watched him carefully when the footage was shown on the news. As he exited the vehicle he didn't seem to have the demeanor of someone who's had the life scared out of him by this incident. He seemed a bit rehearsed in his answers. Interesting he would call 911. He knows he would probably get good 'in action' video footage from those ubiquitous news helicopters patrolling California's highways. And of course all the police helping him. Great for court later on. I've never seen a follow up story to this from the news media. How come? What did the police say? Not a peep on a fairly sensational event.

A report yesterday morning on KFI was that the California Prius guy is in debt to the tune of $700,000. The car is being gone over with microscopes and the VDR is being dumped so we should know what the car thought was going on very soon. It should be interesting if it reports accelerator and brake being applied simultaneously - and hopefully how much brake pedal pressure. I'm sure you can smoke the brakes by riding them at 90 MPH.

I just didn't care for the scientific vs. commercial content ratio on that video. Less logo time = more test video time.

FORD = fuckin old rebuilt Dodge

They don't make ANYTHING as sturdy as they used to, but the old Ford trucks were pretty reliable. And the old Ford tractors were 10 times as bulletproof as the trucks. My moms uncle has an old Ford tractor he bought brand new in the early 60's that he STILL uses on his farm today.
