Yeah, something doesn't add up for sure... I let my imagination run a little and speculated to how the 2 problems could be linked but yeah there's no telling. It's crazy there's not a solid explanation for all of this yet.

My tacoma is bullet-proof as well. BOY did I put a hurting on it in highschool too(and my deductibles steadily increased...) Anyway that's off-topic though. Do you have the sr5(I guess it turned into trd by 98-99?) package? My tacoma is the best beach driving vehicle i've ever seen. Blows any other truck or jeep away... just no comparison at all. I can hold 2nd gear through the softest sand imaginable in 2 wheel drive without letting air out of my tires... pretty awesome :)

Nah I just got a basic one. I deliberately wanted the 4 cyl for gas economy so it's the 2.4 litre. Not so great up hills with a load, but works fine for picking up lumber, bigger stuff and hauling crap to the dump. The inside is decent too- very carlike and has air-cond.

Some of the incidents involved the driver pumping the brakes and when you do that apparantly there isn't enough vacuum left in the system to power the brakes, the result is heavy brake pedal pressure and no braking power. I'm not sure what the ABS might think about full power on the wheels with the brakes applied. The big danger of turning off ignition at speed is loss of power brakes and power steering or the locking mechanism locking you into a direction you might not want to be going at 90 MPH. I would certainly be testing the machine my first time behind the wheel of a Toyota now, just to see what it does when you have to kill the thing before it kills you.

Last I heard, putting brake fluid in your transmission was the first step to needing to buy a new transmission.  :dohdohdoh:

Buy American, you twits.

A couple decades ago, Toyota was an importer.  Nowadays they build 12 different vehicles in North America, with their engineering plant in Erlanger, KY, and manufacturing plants in Alabama, Indiana, Kentucky, Texas, West Virginia, and Mississippi.

Quote from: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/news/2008-03-17_toyota.aspx
In 2007 Toyota made 1.7 million vehicles in North America and by 2010 will have the capacity to build 2.2 million, ...

The company has invested $21.8 billion, created 43,858 direct jobs, and purchased $29 billion in goods from North American suppliers, including some 500 Tier One suppliers in 25 states
[...]
As a domestic manufacturer, Toyota is now subject to the same regulatory and legislative issues as GM, Chrysler, or Ford.

So as far as the impact on american jobs, and the economy of american parts suppliers, it would seem buying Toyota effectively is buying American.

Although this is irrelevant to my point, I've never owned a Toyota, nor has anyone else in my immediate family.  My parents drove Ford and Chevrolet since before I was born.  I have a '93 Ford F-150, my wife has a Jeep Rubicon.  Any-fucking-way...

Nevertheless, I learned about Toyota's North American manufacturing operations a few years back in an article comparing aspects of agile software development to principles and techniques of lean manufacturing.

i own a 2001 monte carlo it does 32 mpg hwy witch is hella good for a big heavy car , what helps is the awful long gear it has , it does 2000 rpms at 80mph , so ill be doing like 30mpg going 80 on the hwy , if the road is strait... it never really drops under 20 mpg in the city. this is why i still own the car 150k miles on it atm works flawless, when i bought it used at 30k miles it did have some electronic problems witch i got fixed though warranty.

nao foc the reason you should own a chevy is because they have basically used the same trans since the 80's witch is the 700-4r , now called a 4l60-e, and most rescent 4l65, these 3 tranny's share the same internals , so when they break you can replace them at a cheaper price if you don't go to an assbag mechanic who is only trying to bank.

now the 99+ gm vehicles can be hp-tuned or ls1edit tuned among a few other laptop programs witch you can do many things with . if you use wideband tune , the lappy will measure the air/fuel via exhaust sensor thus tuning your car/truck for a more accurate spark fuel and air delivery. normally putting a k & n filter and an aftermarket muffler will help your car/truck pickup with less effort so this should save u a tad of gas/strain on the car/truck.

now if the person doing the tune is a retard , he can do some damage to the engine.

so i wanna say thank you GM for using push rod technology and making it more reliable , newer vehicles will have better intakes and i trust they will make more power + better mpg as we go.

The big danger of turning off ignition at speed is loss of power brakes and power steering or the locking mechanism locking you into a direction you might not want to be going at 90 MPH.

I've been in a car where the driver (for shits) turned off the car & pulled out the key going down a hill (Mt. Soledad, in SD) there was plenty of pressure left on the brake side of the system to bring the car to a safe stop, not sure about the power steering. I don't think the steering column locks until the transmission is put in Park.  :humm:

Something I might try in my car (on an empty road) one day.  ;)

Aren't virtually all car parts (except the body and frame) purchased from Mexico anyway? I guess that still is North America.

Still not as effectively "buying American" as buying a Ford.

And coincidentally... after my grandfather finished slaying Japs in Okinawa, he went to work for Ford. Thank you for doing your part, Quadz. I always knew you were an alright guy.
