I dueled 'Receptive_mink' a few times. Months after he "disappeared".. he didn't talk much, but said things like daelmun and played like him. I've seen him use this name before as well.... It may have been an alias though, who knows.

This is a thread of daelmun quoting text of someone claiming that nickname. There is no mention of who the quote is supposed to be from, so it makes me think that he is quoting himself. The thread was split into entropy and I have not had time to look through the entropy split to see if someone else may have said it.

If the ffa one doesn't match up, try the same time period on central/east tdm servers as well please.

Queried the database for all servers. The last daelmun we have is:

The first Receptive_Mink we have is:

Slightly different IP, but same subnet.

The last Receptive_Mink sighting was:

There is one current player on that ISP, who first appeared 166 days ago, who is active on dm and vanilla:

All of the GeoIP information for these nextgentel.com IPs unfortunately is pretty generic and just says "Oslo, NO". And unfortunately I don't have any record of Receptive_Mink ever having the exact same IP as daelmun. But on the other hand they don't overlap in time periods. So it seems we can neither be sure they are different people, nor can we be sure they are the same person.

Searching the old server logs for Receptive_Mink's game chat might be interesting though.

No kidding... I didn't get a chance to post it earlier but I was going to say that there is a player named 'sidelines' (usually on dm) that always makes me think of him. Pings around 160-180 and his playing style really reminds me of daelmun's, especially on dm1. Flawless jumps, the same reckless and not-so-serious approach and a pleasure to watch. Most of the time he's just afk but chase him when he's playing dm1. When a few months ago I asked him if he had more names he said yes but he obviously didn't feel like telling anything. Whateva.

I would say that it is not unusual for him to just be taking time off of quake 2. I would definitely say that he is most likely just taking an extended break from gaming. It's possible that something has happened to him, but after reading that it sounds more reasonable that he is taking time off.

Hmm, well the fact that daelmun claimed to use Receptive_Mink on the zone as an alias, while his disappearance followed by someone from Oslo, Norway using that name is hopefully an indication that it's him. It would have been nice to see his ip was exactly the same at one point.

As far as I know, Receptive Mink claimed he was daelmun, but never made a thing of it, which seems compatible with a non-troll/nick-stealing motive. But also at the same time, he typed and acted differently than daelmun...at least I think so to a degree.

This raises the question though, why would he publicly state he was daelmun, yet be a complete mystery to Gren and other close q2 players. He wasn't a nutcase or unstable in any way, the complete opposite. Still need more information, hopefully he is Mink.

I think that this is not uncharacteristic. The quote that I posted includes daelmun stating that he used the alias because he wanted to play but didn't want to get back into the same routines. So gren not knowing where he went is not an unprecedented situation.

I do want to float another possibility because me convincing people that he is probably O.K. is as bad as someone starting rumors that he is dead when I really don't know anything. It should be fairly obvious that if anything bad did indeed happen to the guy, it would be random and happen at any time. So It does look like daelmun purposefully took some time off starting around august 2007 but within those 2 years of his absence, something still could have happened to him. It's possible that both types of speculation are true. I'm not saying this to spread more rumors, just to point out that in the grand scheme of things we still don't know what happened until we get some more concrete information.

That being said, I hope he's o.k..
