I actually am looking into getting an old typewriter for our kids to use from time to time.

Spell check has really damaged our daughters already sub par spelling. It's crazy how much calculators are used in school as well.
She passes all her classes with A's but it's like pulling teeth out of a cat in a bathtub trying to get her to 'pen and paper' any kind of math problem.

Yeah, but dividing 1,024 by 8 on a piece of paper shouldn't involve tears.

She uses a calculator to do a whole sheet of giving 10% of a list of numbers...

My high school math teacher was like a military dictator. He sometimes allowed us to use calculators on quizes and tests, but even if we provided the correct final answer and didn't write the solution out the exact way he instructed us to do so, it was still marked wrong. Sometimes... we DID write it out in long form to prove how we got the answer and he'd STILL mark it wrong because of penmanship. He had strict criteria on how to properly write certain numbers. All 0's had to form complete circles, no gaps at the top or he'd call it a "U" and mark it wrong. 5's had to have two right angles at the top part of the number or he'd call it an "S" and mark it wrong. 4's had to cross completely or he'd call it a "y" and mark it wrong. 2's, if they were the looped variety, had to have the loop in the lower 1/3rd portion of the number or he'd assume it was a 0 with tails. And we had to remember to do all this while taking the quizes and tests with a stop watch dictating the finish time. It was a total pain in the ass at first, but it certainly challenged us to be better. At the time, no one could stand being in his math classes. But looking back, I gotta admit, he was without any doubt whatsoever the BEST teacher I ever had for any class in my entire life.
