Here's a good book ( so I hear ) , haven't read it. But I hear it's about someone hunting down a hacker when the internet first came about.

Not sure how you hunt someone down who is going through 8 proxies around the world, where at the end of the line he's on wireless in a library. Impossible right?

(Forth is a programming language, great for embedded systems, or computers with not much RAM or CPU power... in the sense that Forth is extremely simple to implement, and yet is amazingly powerful considering its simplicity...)

No, I don't think he was on a wireless in a library, there were no wireless LAN's at the time, or at least they were very rare and libraries didn't have them. It's been several years since I read it. All the systems were *nix systems and they were all compromised or hacked due to poor administration practices, even on the military computers.

Yes that's the book ,I had the wrong name before. I didn't read it, but I did read a book by the author of the Da Vinci code with a similar theme, although it was more about cracking security protocols at the NSA and what not, with some spies thrown in there. Very good, I think he ran it through some technical readers, or he is familar with computers in general. Sometimes the technical stuff in books and movies hurts my ears, if you can remember the movies Swordfish and Firewall : ).

On another note,
IPSEC is just amazing, no matter how many tunnels I setup I still don't know what's going on :>
phase 1, exchange the keys securely using diffie-helmen, and some other shit
phase 2, encrypt the traffic with 3des, or aes

then there are digests, the one way hashes used to verify the message wasn't alerted. You gotta come from a certain IP, with the right protocols, and password, or certificate. And the middle is ISP's you have no access to, really GRE tunnels would be just fine, the same result , a tunnel over a public network to a private, but without the encryption. I think people like OpenVPN go a bit overboard, saying SSLVPN is an absurd idea (they use SSL as encryption, but a client based VPN). They don't like the idea of being at an internet kiosk and creating a tunnel to somewhere private. I do realize VPN's like PPTP can be crarcked, and you could capture the data, and replay it to crack it. But hey, can't sacrafice everything. I would like to know how many IPSEC tunnels have been hacked because of weaknesses in DES, vs a workstation being hacked etc.

If a military laptop is comphiscated by the enemy in a humvee from a dead soldier, should there be security precautions to prevent this, even though they may limit the soldiers functionality?

The big problem with the internet is you cannot trace anyone with intent to do harm at all. I like privacy, but there are times when someone does *deserve* to be in trouble.

I have read some of Dijkstra's work, and I do think it's very interesting, but man, there are time constraints, and you're gonna have bugs in complicated systems (parity issues from hardware malfunctions etc) So I think he should of relaxed and gave up some ground on certain things, but thanks for the nice papers, and the cool OSPF algorithm it works great
