Not married yet, just engaged. No date set in stone at the moment. Perhaps sometime in the fall. She'd like to do it over in Greece where some of her family lives. Not sure if that'll be possible though. Pretty sure we'd have enough money for whatever we want, but haven't even looked into the legality of it, and from the way she talks, the whole economic situation in Greece right now seems to have the country teetering on the brink of widespread riots and civil war. Not too thrilled about that.

A civil war breaking out in your own country is one thing. I know where the hell I am and I speak the language. But the last thing I wanna do is get stuck in another country on the opposite side of the globe where I don't speak the language and have a violent civil uprising break out. Getting out of such areas isn't easy once the native military locks down borders and transportation. That's a recipe for getting illegally jailed for a very very long time or worse. I dunno, maybe she's exaggerating a little on the current state of affairs over there, I haven't really kept up with it.

Still pretty tempting to do though. From all the pictures I've ever seen, Greece is a very beautiful country with tons of history and things to see. I've never been to Europe before, I'm sure it would make for quite a memorable honeymoon.

50 cents for a payphone call? LOL! I can remember when it was 10 cents.

Where I grew up we even had party lines. This was where two homes shared a line, they used two ring voltage frequencies to selectively ring the parties. Occasionally if you went to use the phone you'd hear the other party using it. Courtesy dictated you immediately hang up the phone and not listen in. You'd wait a while and pick it up again to see whether the line was available.

I'm not old enough to remember party lines, or 10 cent payphones. They were always 25 cents as long as I can remember. But I definitely remember rotary phone dials. I remember when I was growing up, my folks had this butt-ugly jaundice piss yellow rotary phone hanging on the kitchen wall by the fridge with a stretchy coiled cord on it that would stretch about 15 or more feet so my mom could talk while doing dishes or cooking or even stretch it into the living room.

No shit, I'd seriously decorate my house with a bunch of 70's and 80's shit like that except for the fact that it'd look so terrible with the modern carpet, moulding, and fixures. I have a cobblestone masonry fireplace with bright white moulding and golden pecan colored hardwood floors in the kitchen/breakfast room, dining room, and foyer, also all the door hardware is polished nickel ornate looking shit. So if you can imagine throwing a bunch of vintage 70's and 80's decor all over the place... all it's gonna look like afterwards is a pile of mardi gras puke.

Only two houses?    What was the occasionally funnest thing to do (I will agree it was NOT courteous to do) was to use the 300 baud dial-up modem for awhile on the line then after about 15 minutes listen to every complain about how bad the lines were getting - "did you hear that god-awful noise the phone line was making this morning?" and the like. NO ONE had a clue what a computer was, much less a modem, so, basically, we did any data transfer from midnight to 5.

In this area 60% of the rural lines are STILL basically party lines - technically. The pulse tone dialing kinda took away the hearing all the phones on the line ring when someone called you (two longs and a short here ) but if you dial your own number, the voice will come on and tell you "someone on your party line has called you. Please hang up and wait for your phone to ring." When it it rings and you pick it up the voice will tell you "someone on your party line has called you. Please wait for them to pick up the phone and begin talking."

Yep. You're old.. Me too   Pick up the phone:  "Sarah? Will you get me shorty over at the courthouse?" Or pick up the phone and click the hook a few times: Operator, I'd like Brentwood 5643 please"

We were suburban bordering on rural. We were surrounded by farms but it was a developed neighborhood of 1 acre lots built in 1952. We walked to school along the farm road, up hill, both ways, in the snow.

I think we were off the party line system by 1970 if not before but I do remember named exchanges too. The party lines were conventional ring but they used 20Hz and 30Hz ring voltages. The bell wiring was connected to a filter in the network block to select the ringer frequency desired. I think I might have a couple of rotary phones in the attic... I'll have to clean them up and offer them as antiques.

I have a vintage IMSAI front panel from an S-100 bus computer too.
