1v1 and TDM Demos / Punk>FAS> vs bonzai, DM1
« on: April 05, 2011, 06:18:22 PM »
This was a fun/funny game.  I did better than I thought, but bonzai was really tough.  I got some pretty good rockets on him I think.

Ok... I was trying to play it off like I lost, but the score gets tied up while the 10 second countdown is being announced.  I was down 6-1 at one point, but came back.  Some interesting stuff, I suppose.

FFA Demos / Punk>FAS> FFA Demos
« on: April 02, 2011, 07:17:46 PM »
Here are some demos of me playing FFA on the Tasty DM server.  I will add more periodically.

The one on dm4 is from last night.  It has a funny sequence where someone was trying to rocket jump into the rail room, and I railed him mid RJ on his way up, from above.  Not too far into the demo.

It's funny... when playing, I feel like I move incredibly herky jerky, and like really fast, but when watching the demos, it doesn't seem all that fast to me.

Quake / R1Q2 crashing
« on: April 02, 2011, 05:47:34 PM »
My R1Q2 has crashed twice in the last couple days.  Anybody else have issues with the occasional crash with R1Q2?  I don't remember ever having this problem a while ago.

Grrr.... I try to rejoin and of course the server is now full...

Quake / Auto-record demos with r1q2
« on: April 01, 2011, 03:58:24 PM »
I was playing really really good earlier, even got a pretty sweet air-rocket, and it made me wish I had recorded that match.  What is the setting/command to have r1q2 auto-record every time you play?

/dev/random / Black Friday SCORES!
« on: November 26, 2010, 11:09:35 AM »
I'm going pretty low-key this BF, as I usually do.  Just shopping from the comfort of my own home, on my computer.  Picked up a refurb B&N Nook e-Reader for $86.  I don't read much now, but maybe this will encourage me to read more =P  Picked up a couple games on the cheap from some of Steam's sales.

I would have loved to have gotten that 42" 1080p Plasma from buy.com for like $298 shipped.  Would like to get a new SSD and/or a large 2TB drive for storage.  Also itchin to FINALLY get an LCD, though not sure if I'll like em.  Still sportin a 19" CRT.

What about you guys... any epic BF scores to brag about?

Are there any other programs that are similar to Limewire that serve the same function?

What other forums do you guys visit regularly?  Is this forum the one you are most active on?

By "active" I mean posting topics, messages, replies, etc.

Heard about this on another forum, and that thread got locked before I could discuss it there.  Here is the link on CNN.com about the story - http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/09/01/puppies.river.toss/index.html?hpt=T2

Here is the video link (I'm surprised CNN actually linked the video on a main page article) -
http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=bb4_1283184704

It seems this took place somewhere in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

I wanted to hear others' opinions on this video.  What is your reaction when you see the video?

I read a lot about the video, last night actually, and decided not to watch it til today.  After watching it, I didn't find it all that brutal.  The puppies appear to be very very young, probably a week old at most.  While I find it sad, I don't necessarily think these people were trying to cause pain to these animals.  They weren't overly cruel in their actions IMO.  They didn't spike them on the ground, or do their best to make sure they landed on one of those tree branches before they hit the ground.  The girl did get a little "creative" with her tosses near the end, trying to throw them high.

In many countries, the US included, unwanted puppies, kittens, etc., are often killed quickly after birth, or thrown into rivers, etc.  I know I've heard of people in the US putting a bunch of unwanted kittens, or ones that couldn't otherwise be cared for, into a bag with a brick and thrown into a river.  I find the act sad, but I suppose it's one of the more humane, and inexpensive ways to discard animals that otherwise might have starved to death, etc.  I'm not sure if they have the equivalent of a Humane Society in these other smaller countries, where they can take unwanted animals instead of dealing with them themselves.

What do you guys think?

Quake / Why do you do it, quadz?
« on: July 17, 2010, 07:40:19 PM »
You spend a significant amount of your time, and at ~$690 a month for server costs, a pretty hefty chunk (by most people's standards) of your own money to keep these servers up.  I can only assume that the majority of the people who benefit from your efforts do so without any personal expense.  On the graph page that shows the server maintenance costs along with paypal donations, you say that you will keep these servers up as long as you stay employed.

First off, these questions come from a place of admiration and total appreciation.  So, why do you do it?  I presume Quake 2 is as much of a hobby for you as it is for the majority of the players that have been playing here for these many years.  Does it ever feel like an obligation; insomuch as if the tastyspleen servers suddenly disappeared, the options for online Quake 2 gaming would be severely crippled, especially here in the US, anyway.

My interest in this game has had many peaks and valleys over the ~11 or so years I've been playing.  Whenever my interest in this game takes an upturn, it's great to know that there's a community like tastyspleen that's still going strong and with an excellent support system that I can easily jump right back into.

I haven't even played at all lately, but was just feeling very thankful for your efforts, quadz, and all the other people who do their part in making this such a great home for a ~13 year old game that's just too good to forget about  :bravo:

Jump & Trick Demos / q2dm8 jump
« on: June 05, 2010, 12:28:01 PM »
Hadn't done this one before today, but it wasn't all that difficult after I tried it a few times.  It's the jump where you start out on walkway by chaingun/above GL, speed down towards room with 2 rail slugs, and go up the slope/ramp to railgun/third level.  I use the 2nd chute to the left instead of the one directly behind the spawnpad there.

Quake / "Black Hole" Server/map bug. What is it, what causes it?
« on: May 22, 2010, 12:00:47 PM »
Occasionally while in a FFA game, I've noticed that certain spots on a map become sort of a "Black Hole" of sorts.  You can't see these spots, but when you get close to them, you usually hear a railgun hum, and they stick you, or sort of make it feel laggy, just when passing through these particular spots.

Is anybody else familiar with this anomaly that I'm referring to?  What causes this exactly?

/dev/random / Valve game Portal is free til the 24th
« on: May 14, 2010, 10:16:37 AM »
Sorry if there was already a thread about this somewhere else.

For those that don't already know, the Valve (Half-Life, etc.) game "Portal" is free if you add/download it to your Steam account by the 24th.  If you don't already have it, go get it!

Quake / Banzai!!!
« on: March 19, 2010, 02:19:06 PM »
Hi =)  I don't think I've touched Quake 2 in at least 1 1/2 years, but I'm getting the itch again, and ready to jump back in, BANZAI!!!  I hope my advanced age won't have slowed me down too much.

I've lost all my files though, or at least my .PAK files.  Can anybody recommend a good pak that is low on eye candy, and high on useful stuff, like high visibility skins, upgraded sounds, the grenade countdown timer, wallha.. er, crosshairs, or anything else that is generally considered desirable =)  Actually, I don't mind a little eye candy, if it's hard to avoid that with newer paks.  It's definitely not a requirement for me to have fun though =)

Also, is R1Q2 still somewhat regularly updated, and the typically used client?
