Administration is a risky thing, especially online. The truth is, anyone can run or administrate a server, and anyone can vouch for someone without addressing any concerns one might have about the particular server they'd be handling. If you're running a serious network that wants to take care in what people you choose for this kind of thing, you're going to have to do a lot better than some arbitrary majority vote. There's a lot of trust you put in somebody when you choose to give them access to a particular part of a network you run. Activity and presentation mean nothing when talking about this.

Say you legitimately do want to help a server and are willing to do what it takes to maintain it properly. There are specific concerns that also should at least be addressed in one way or another.
  • Have you agreed to and/or understand the basic guidelines/rules set by the head administrator?
  • What do you feel the current administration has failed to do up until this point, and do you believe that you can do a better job at maintaining the server?
  • Do you believe you can edit properties of the servers in a way that complies with a great majority of the servers playerbase?
  • Do you believe you can make administrative decisions that will benefit the playerbase?
  • What parts of the maplist do you believe needs to be organized, and how?

If there is anything else you believe should also be said about this, feel free to say it.

For the record, you don't have to put in "Slayer", you can simply put in "$name$" and your client will detect whatever name you're using and apply it to the script, so you don't need to always use one name in order to make it work properly.

You can also do a similar script to make a sound every time you kill yourself; there are a lot of creative things you can do with the trigger/if commands in Apr. It's a little tedious making these kinds of things, though. Your imagination is limited only by your patience.

The stock death messages above will not work in other mods with unique death messages such as WOD or LOX, and need to be edited accordingly to the specific mods in question and kept in an autoexec.cfg in the mod folder.

Keep in mind though; the if/then command below is only available in AprQ2 and not R1Q2. With this, the possibilities of the trigger command can be extended greatly.

Quake / New Vortex server up - 108.178.55.116:27910

Hello,

I have a new server set up running the Vortex mod - [Rejects Dedicated Vortex Arena @ 108.178.55.116:27910]

Vortex is an RPG mod for Quake II, similar in vein to the KOTS mod.

The server is running Chilean Vortex v2.65, not GHz's Vortex. As of right now, the server is not completely set up the way I want it to be (q2admin is still not functional right now), generally speaking however, it is functional, and anything I do from now on won't affect anybody's characters. (I also backup everybody's characters every month).

If you already know how to play Vortex, let me know if there's anything I can do to improve the server in ways I can actively change.

Things that I can change about the server:
         
  • The maplist (Each play mode is restricted to 64 maps, however)
  • The amount of pregame time before combat starts
  • The rate in which people gain experience and credits (There are options to change the amount of experience gained in both PvP and PvM, meaning that it's possible to make it so that you can gain more experience in PvP as opposed to PvM {default}, vice-versa)
  • The amount of experience needed for a level up
  • Anything involving characters, that includes experience, credits, any type of points, and possibly character classes of pre-existing characters (I haven't tested this yet, but I do know it is an option with rcon)
  • Unique runes

Things that I cannot change about the server:
  • ANY changes to the source code, which includes:
    • The effectiveness of any aspect of every ability, weapon, talent, item, and class.
    • The effectiveness and rate of appearance of runes excluding uniques (when it comes to effectiveness).
    • Any aspect of monster AI.
    • Points gained after level-ups.
    • Adding new physical content.
    • Any technical details of the mod whatsoever (this is kind of hard to explain, but it pretty much includes anything I haven't already covered. Say you want the vrxmenu to change; how the vrxmenu is displayed is dictated in the source code, which is something I have no control over. Use your judgement for this one, but don't feel afraid to come to me about it).

I'm simply somebody who hosts the version of Vortex that I wanted to run, I cannot code, and I cannot change anything about the source; I had to get quadz (the admin of the Tastyspleen servers) to help me compile the .so file needed to just run the server. I really appreciate having people come up to me to call bugs to my attention, but just know that there's very little I can do about it.

Know, however, that if you exploit game-breaking bugs in the source code, your character will be at risk for deletion or worse.

you used to play as Mad,  but what name do you use now?
What name are you using when you try to connect?


There are other things that MIGHT keep you from connecting.
make sure your name isn't player,  and that you are using a common skin/model

There is a way to allow you get thru a sub-net ban
Quadz is the one you need,  just answer his questions....

Thanks for the reply. I'm still using the name "MaD". Most definitely not using "Player", and my skin is the "Psycho" from the standard Male model. I am thinking the cvar to go around the subnet ban is what I need... Thanks again.
