With quadz gone we felt it was important for the community to know who some of us were so they had people to reach out to if they problems. I can see how it would be hard to imagine why quadz could possibly have wanted to insulate us from posts such as these.

i've tried to set up anticheat, but it must not work, because anytime i join a tastyspleen server, it says i do not have it installed.

oh well, i tried. no idea what i'm doing wrong. it was frustrating, but clearly not a big deal since it isn't enforced and most players don't have it.

The anticheat.dll is simply placed in your quake2 root directory next to the game client executable.
It's a 32-bit DLL so it only works with 32-bit r1q2.exe clients. It doesn't work with q2pro, q2rtx or kmquake2 or any of the other clients, afaik.
The r1q2 client can't be built from source. It must be r1ch's original distribution. The last version of that was b8012.
Self-built clients don't have the secret sauce needed to use the anticheat module, for obvious reasons.

FWIW, most servers don't force anticheat and r1ch never recommended that they should.
The if the anticheat is enabled on a server it will always report anticheat status but no significant action is taken.
Forced anticheat requires all clients use r1q2 and Linux users are left out in the cold, along with clients like q2pro, q2rtx, etc.
Openness and trust go hand in hand. Automated cheat detection takes a lot of work and secure, trustworthy executables that don't exist in the Q2 community.
