Quake / Just got the RTX version, Q2 is still a BLAST :)

I play rdr2, skyrim, stellaris, metro and they are all great games, but man every now and then i come back to quake to and there is a smile on my face from start to finish.

Love this game, thank you guys for keeping it alive.

Could you post console logs from your Q2 client when the HTTP problem occurs?

Maybe it's something we can fix.

(console text can be saved to disk with the condump command)

cl_http_downloads 0
When in doubt, `cmdlist` and `cvarlist` are your friend. There's also tab-completion at the console for commands and console variables.

Quake / Disabling HTTP Downloads with aprq2

Im using jdolans aprq2 quake2 on linux and this evening when trying to connect to tastyspleen.net::dm i got 404's trying to do http map downloads.
Using another quake2 client the map downloaded ok. Anyway to disable http downloads ?
Nothing about it appeared in the readme.

Quetoo 64 bit quake2 source and binary
I dont know how many q2 linux executables are out there, i have tried 3:
1. q2pro, which didnt work at all, wouldnt detect the keyboard

2. yamagi quake, which is in my opinion the best single player and best ui wise and supports hi res texture paks

3. quetoo https://github.com/jdolan/quake2 which provides support for the yamagi hi res texture pak http://deponie.yamagi.org/quake2/texturepack/ and imo provides the smoothest multiplayer experience.

quetoo compiles easily on slackware 64 -current.
My frag rate nearly doubled using this one and the network play is extremely smooth.
If you are going to try it, your multiplayer player models need to be in your ~/.quake2/baseq2/players directory or quetoo wont be able to find them.
Some cons, the weapons leave trails that are somewhat obtrusive and that i havent figured out how to turn off yet, also cl_maxfps doesnt seem to be working, i have it set to 100 and its consistently at 199-200.
otoh with the other pluses, the above are somewhat trivial and you get nice stencil buffer blood splashes on the floors and walls as an extra

Your avatar and the term "slackware" reminds me of my high school days, haha! I used to be into the SubGenius stuff back then. Had countless blank tapes that I filled up recording episodes of the Hour of Slack off the Georgia Tech radio station, as well as the local show Bob's Slacktime Funhouse run by Rev Swoozie the Floozie and Rev Dr Nolan Voyd. I'm sure I still have a few in junk boxes in a closet around here. I know I still have my copy of the Book of the SubGenius. It's on a bookshelf with all my old guitar magazines and guitar tab books. Pulled it out a couple years back to have something to read while taking a shit. Good god, what a collection of poignant pointless weirdness. Me and a few friends actually made it up to New York back in Summer 1997 for the X-Day drill. Had a fucking BLAST! Really wanted to go THE X-Day campout the next year in 98 but couldn't find anyone to go with. And then after high school, I just kinda got so wrapped up in other shit that I forgot all about the Church of the SubGenius. Pretty crazy to see that it's still going strong after all these years. Ivan Stang looks like a fucking old fart now, haha!

I always thought the sub genius stuff was fun but I didnt even connect the fact that i used bob as an avatar and am running slackware Totally sub conscious  , i think.

Since the linux binary seemed to be linked to libs i didnt have I compiled the source on slackware64  -current and it compiled fine and i installed it by copying game.so to quake2/baseq2 and the quake2 executable to the q2 basedir. Runs great ty

Oh man, do i suck 
Thing is when i play vanilla deathmatch i remember where all the weapons and armor etc are, i just get killed before i get to them. Back in the day,  when q2 first came out i was a terror, now im just lunch.
Anybody know of a how to or demo or want to meet me on a server?

May i ask if you do have it installed natively or are u running it through wine? IMO wine is shit for gaming, so its best to install q2pro natively for best results. If you don't know how to do it i could find my instruction jdolan gave me and help you install it natively if you like on irc

I thought about wine but decided to try the yamagi quake client. It seems to work fine, nice and snappy on the input, which i have heard is not the case with wine.
The yamagi is the only 64 bit quake2 linux client out there afaik.

No there shouldnt be any issues unless somoene suspects you are cheating in some way and produces a demo to admin. That message about not using anticheat is automatic for anyone who joins a server who is not using it. Sort of like an encouragment to do so but its not required, unless of course you are forced anticheat for suspected fowl play

Ok, thanks. The linux client works at my monitor resolution 1920x1080

i normally use linux and use a linux quake2 client when connecting to a server. Im aware that anticheat wont work on it. My question was is there going to be a problem with me playing on servers with a linux client when anticheat wont work.

Speaking of nostalgia, your avatar takes me back. Used to be pretty into the Church of the SubGenius in my teens back before the ORIGINAL X-Day happened in 1998. I'm from the Atlanta area, and used to listen to the national radio show, Hour of Slack, as well as the local SubGenius show, Bob's Slacktime Funhouse, both of them on the WREK Georgia Tech radio station. Local show used to be hosted by this lovely foul mouthed lady, Rev Susie the Floozie.
