I totally agree about the rail. In Q2, even on a LAN the shots have a very slight delay which adds a small element of prediction. The Q2 rail (including the sound and visuals) is absolutely perfect and the most satisfying weapon I've ever used in any game.

As for the lightning gun, it just can't compare to QW. I remember some of the crazy stuff you could pull off such as pinning someone against a ceiling and then smashing them with a rocket almost instantly.

Weapon balance completely drains the fun out of the game.

I would love for both QW and Q2 to be brought right up to date (preferably by Id Software) but without any changes to the physics, maps or weapons.

QL isn't watered down? Now I'll admit to not having played it for a good 5 or 6 months but seriously?

All I can remember is them constantly nerfing weapons in the name of 'balance'. The rail gun was degraded so there were no more one shot kills on spawn. Also the lightning gun felt like you were spaying someone with a weak garden hose. In QW the lightning gun was devastating... Not to mention the same boring physics, maps and cartoon graphics / sounds that made Q3 (for me) such a disaster.

Anyone remember Carmack's Quake II remix idea from back in 2003?

I can imagine so many gamers (that put up with watered down shite like QL) would love the Q2 experience if given a chance. The problem is that Q2 is just not accessible for new players to just pick up and play.

Just look at the hassle people have to go through to just get game going.

1) Install the game from the CD or download a copy
2) Download and install the patches
3) Then to find an active server list
4) Then discover they could do with R1Q2 / Anticheat

The other major problem is the stock Q2 graphics / settings in 2010 look dreadful and would put off 99% of new people.

If the game could be repacked (maybe with high res or even new textures), all the updates including R1Q2 and a server browser then this might be what is needed to bring some new blood into the game.

I think Tasty DM has a 2 second invul upon spawn anyway so not much of an issue. Although there are a fair few noobs who do stand around like they're waiting for a bus.

As for Quad timing, well i've already voiced my humble opinion the DM Server Suggestion thread. Just get rid of Quad completely and it makes for a more enjoyable game. Apart from Elysium and a couple of others, most other players tend not to use it so what is the point of having it anyway?

Either way, DM1 with a Quad right in the centre on the arena is just a complete fail.

There is absolutely no doubt in mind my this guy is an excellent FFA player. I originally thought he was just a quad timer nob but have seen him tear it up just as well without it.

Definately nothing dodgy going on here.  :righteous:

dm / Re: Experiment: A few occasional custom dm maps
« on: July 12, 2010, 06:22:55 PM »
So while I have no doubt these changes were made with the best intentions, I ask if you could please consider just disabling this particular feature from the dm server. There are several different types of servers available if a player begins to bore of a classic dm configuration, and I think it would be better to have these players help populate a custom server than force everyone on a stock server to play their map of choice.

I think voting works better than mymap.  At least it gives all of the other players some choice in the decision.

I also prefer standard Q2DM1 and not the current one used which has a very poorly placed Quad damage right in the centre of the map.  :WTF:

dm8 on mage was awesome, but some maps are just more fun with quad like tokay's towers.

If I can say one positive thing about the quad on DM2, is that it puts the person that goes after it in a fairly vulnerable position.  Though 99x out of 100 everybody rushes the RL so the lone person (or 2) that goes after quad often gets it undisturbed.

I love playing on DM2 when there are around 3-8 good players on the map. You can often get some fun tactical games going on.

It's probably my least favourite map to play on when it is full.  It just becomes a complete RL bloodbath. It really isn't worth travelling round the map (on tasty DM anyway  ;D ) as all the lift tops are locked down by campers (hi Shadowkiller and +++priorie+++) .

all in all, half the comments on this thread just sound like ffa noobs bitching cause some one got some frags in a way they didnt like :/

From the few people who have posted in favour of a different type of DM server I can assure you these players are certainly not noobs.  Why not show up on there and show us how amazing you are. I would love to spec you to learn from your greatness. ;)

Of course things such as Quad timing / BFG / invul / camping / Spam can all be overcome without too much difficulty. The point of this thread is not to debate what is lame or not but just to suggest an alternative which some players may find more enjoyable.

As to the debate whether my suggestion would be pure DM or not, the same arguement could be said about having a quad damage slapped in the centre of Q2DM1 or having a red armor under the stairs. It's all about preference at the end of the day.

To be fair to Fuster the anticheat was disabled because there was never a cheating issue on there. Most players know each other from years of playing and the game is so old. The cheaters would be spotted a mile away.  I could tell Pwnstar was upto no good straight away.

Although with players like c12 who are so damn good some might think there is some dodgy business going on LOL.

Defo not me doing this. I'll report this to Fuster tomorrow. Think I've seen this person on there with the name like 'Pwnstar' and others.

I know Fuster relaxed the anticheat enforcement about a year ago when quite a few old skool players were unable to connect. I think its a good idea to add that back in.

Cheers

I use cl_maxfps 120 with vsync on with 120hz monitor. I have a bind on my mouse wheel to drop down to cl_maxfps 90 for all the crate jumps.

it might thin out the DM server players though, which is not a good thing, if people have highly split opinions on it, its best to not do it and just keep letting players play on DM, small groups means there is more chance of people leaving, and as i have said before thats the last thing we want with quake2

I can understand this but the DM server is full most of the day. I usually see 10 - 16 people on whenever I refresh the list. Also the powerups are disabled half the time anyway so someone must have raised this issue before.  8)

The only thing extra really I've listed differently (except grenade ammo) is BFG removal and I'm suggesting all this for another server anyway. You could then keep DM1 with powerups permanently on then.  ;)

I actually saw a player (Les Ped?) yesterday with a bind which was something like "12 years of Quake 2 - No Quad, No BFG, No Invul, No Camping, No Spawn Kills"

So there are definately players who like me go on the server with the same view.

Ok, I think I need to clarify something here after a few angry approaches i've had in game. I like Tastyspleen, this community and will definately keep on playing on the DM1 server.

All I'm suggesting here is a few slight modifications with a new DM server. If nobody is interested in a DM server without powerups and BFG then thats cool too.

Peace.  :smiley_aanr:

OK, I played Burnside and he rail camps rofl. I came onto q2dm8, and all you did was run around the upper catwalks railing me when I ran around to get the rail or rocket launcher or either chain. Now I really don't care about you doing that (denying players the weapons is part of the game), but I find it hypocritical to complain about players grenade camping when you do something that is significantly more difficult to dodge.

BTW, [TC]Granny used grenade launcher, not hand nades.
Oh come on lol. I've got a 120 ping on there. My rail effieciency is about 30% at best!  :WTF:
