I used to work with a pipefitter who welded piece of 2 or 3 inch schedule 80 black pipe onto the front of his old Ford F-250 because some asshole kept backing into his bumper at the apartment complex he lived in. He said it was also very handy for effectively ramming other cars and objects out of his way.

if you'll notice the first 4x4 of the bumper, along with a slightly shorter 4x6 behind it, are through-bolted to the pieces of channel which normally hold the stock bumper (claimed by a tree one time when i had gone down a very long and narrow dirt path... couldn't 3-point turn and had to reverse it like 300 yards.. eventually i was doing 15-20 and got my directions mixed up haha - bumper was totalled, tailgate eventually needed replacing as well).  In addition, they are directly butted-up to part of the actual frame of the truck which is not visible from the pic, so the bolts aren't even taking much of the impact.  i could hit a full-sized dumpster at 30mph in reverse, leave a good sized dent in it, and drive away unscathed.
