I can't stand malmsteen. Guitar wankery at its finest. I like my solos to fit the songs...not just to be there for the sake of showing off how fast he can play arpegios. That being said I love my guitar solos...they suck but they are done with so much emotion...  ;D lol

Alex sckolnick is the greatest guitarist of all time. I rest my case.

For those of you too young/ignorant to know who Alex Sckolnick is, he was the lead guitarist of Testament until he renounced heavy metal to become a jazz guitarist. His solos are the perfect blend of melody and technicality.

[Argument] No. You're wrong. Of course, I wouldn't expect that a 13 year old who hails from a country with no good living musicians except motorhead to know. Jimi hendrix has long since been surpassed in both songwriting ability and technical skill. There are lots of better guitarists: Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, Al DiMeola, and stevie ray vaughn to name a few. Listen to something besides what they play on the radio. You might learn something. [/argument]

[response to argument]I am 15 not 13,  I despise the radio altogether, I agree that steve vai and joe satriani are amazing guitarists, but jimi hendrix was a great guitarist even if modern day has surpassed him [/response to argument]

p.s he played a right handed strat restrung for a left hander.. anyone know why?

I dunno; that's kind of a specious argument.  I think you have to consider them in the total context: techincal ability, improvisational ability, musicianship, consistency, field of focus, etc.  Hendrix could do all of that, but a number of the others you mention struggle with one or more of those things -- usually the ability to improvise.  Hendrix was a pioneer who changed the face of rock and roll forever in the short span of 3 years.  His music is still highly regarded and plays well after almost 30 years.  As to technical skill, let's remove all the effects and equipment that weren't available in Hendrix's time and see what affect that has on the current crop of virtuosos.

All that doesn't mean the Vai's and Satriani's of the world are chopped liver -- far from it; I think they're awesome players -- but I don't think I would agree that they were better than Hendrix.

Oh BTW, good call on Skolnick being a great, although under-appreciated, guitarist.  I saw Testament a bunch (since they are a San Francisco band) and the guy can flat out play.

I beg to differ on the effects topic. Hendrix used more modulation (flange, wah, etc) effects than many guitarists today use, plus many of the effects that are popular now were available in hendrix's time. However, I think the effects argument is invalid, because there is no effect that makes a person sound talented. it is the listener's job to disregard effects when judging a guitarists technical skill.

hey here's a new list!

The Most Talented And Under Rated guitarists of all time:

1. Larry LaLonde (primus)
2. Uh i forgot his name.....
3. Alex sckolnick
4. Those guys in mastodon
5. GWAR
6. Fear Factory

I'm somewhat wasted right now, just having gotten back from a concert, so I might change my mind later

Kirk hammet is over rated in my opinion. His solos are simple, they just have alot of fast picking.

I'd add a couple more to your total context list Lamont: Revolutionary and Emotion. I feel Hendrix was the most revolutionary force in the evolution of eletric guitar. As for emotion, technical masters like Vai and Satriani can lack the punch of gut wrenching and passionate solos. David Gilmore, technically very weak, has some of the most emotional and impactful solos in music history. Who's better? who's to judge? Good debate tho.

It can be unfair to judge past musicans against current ones particularly over long periods of time. Each generation builds off of and improves over the past. In 1967 when hendrix recorded my favorite solo on the Dylan cover "All Along the Watchtower" the Monkeys were topping the charts and i believe Sgt. Pepper by the Beetles hadn't been released. This month Hendrix is on the cover of Guitar World and Guitar Techniques Magazines and I believe Rolling Stone too 35 years after his death.

I had a much more difficult time learning Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaugh than I did learning Vai and Satriani or even Bach. With Vai and Satriani I could learn it straight off tab sheet music without listening to the song and it'd be damn close. I needed the music for Hendrix and SRV. How you strike a note is just as important as when, where, or how fast.
