Not to worry, we are working on it. I got it to run in Windows. The r1q2 server doesn't load the DLL unless you give it a map command at the end of the freeze.cfg file. Threw me off track for a bit until I remembered that. I prefer to debug in Windows and handle the portability issues later, once I have a working server in Windows the Linux stuff is fairly easy and I am not that good at debugging in GDB.

OK, this one definitely works in Windows and Linux versions. I tested it on r1q2 dedicated server on both platforms.

The .so is provided separately in case your server is set up with all the support files already, otherwise, the tar archive will contain everything you need. Copy the new_freeze189.tar.gz into your quake2 folder.

Untar command: tar -xvf new_freeze189.tar.gz

This will unpack the contents of the archive into the freeze/ folder.

Change to the freeze folder: cd freeze

Copy the run_freeze script from the freeze folder into the quake2 folder: cp run_freeze ..

Change back to quake2 folder: cd ..

Edit your freeze/freeze.cfg file to taste.

Execute the server: ./run_freeze (you may have to set execute permission first)

Once the DLL is proven you can tweak IP address and ports as needed.

The modified sources are included in the tar.
To rebuild the DLL from these modified sources do this in the quake2/freeze/source folder:
make clean
make depend
make

The gamei386.so file will be constructed in the source folder and copied to the freeze folder.

Let me know what kind of bugs you find in the game and I will see what I can do to reproduce and fix them. More complete documentation on setup or a better default configuration would be appreciated.

Only been on for a couple of minutes, and the only thing I've noticed is, vote q2dm1 goes to arena quad dm1. not good for freeze I would say :< Personally also I would only play on the stock dm maps but others may want to play on vanilla-y maps so no biggy! 

Alright I'm going to sound a cheeky bastard here, I ask the following:

Would it be possible if collobrated with other freeze players to decide a 'better' maplist, q2dm1-8 and very good custom maps (ztn etc) come to mind.
Is it possible to vote configs with this mod? Just thinking it would be pretty nice to have an insta and a all weaps config.

As for freeze, there are two types of freeze tag. The traditional game with 2 teams and all weapons, and the insta servers that all but invented the instant grapple. Different maps are appropriate for the different styles of server.

In regular freeze the best maps are very complex and full of places to stuff the dead players. Levels with lava add extra dynamics because you can toss frozen buddies in lava to thaw them quickly. Slideways would be a good candidate, but they dont have to be overly large maps. My favorite freeze map is a common one that I think was on the mutant rotation once.

I can't remember the name or filename but It's a tropical looking theme with an underground base, a shuttle bay, a helicopter pad (with helicopter), and a few waterfalls with passages behind them. It's been a common freeze tag map since the beginning due to it's complex nature.

A good freeze game (of 6-10 players) consists of hunting in a group. One player from team red will likely be killed so a few players from team blue will hide him and protect that room (similar to CTF) while the rest of team red have to save him. There's lots of situations for "last man standing" fights, mind games in which you lure one defender away at a time, or freezing a defender and hooking them back to your "base".

Most of these same strategies exist in the instagib style, it just plays much faster paced and works best with single or double atrium maps that have offshooting hallways. Tokays Towers is a great example.

While searching for the filename of the map described above, I ran accross a map named battle that would be pretty good for regular freeze.

Excellent that it worked. Glad to see another mod revived from the necro-mod domain.

As for voting configs, I see nothing in the mod code for it, only map voting. The Wallfly might be able to manage that.

I have never played the mod myself, so I don't know much about it's modes. I was only concerned with getting the code into shape for use with current tools and systems. Some of the internal logging may have bugs, I hacked it a bit to get a working game but have not tested it. Wallfly does it's own logging so I didn't think extensive testing was needed. Anyone can go forward from here if they want to take over improving the mod. For now, I am happy to fix any bugs you may find in the existing game but I don't know if I want to spend a lot of time developing a new mod from it. I think the default config had 4 teams displayed on the menu.
