Johnny's rules for drinking:

(1) Only drink good booze--no rotgut. Doing so will cut down on hangovers. It will also make it more expensive, perhaps prohibitively so, to overindulge on a regular basis.

(2) Do not mix booze with soft drinks. The reason for this is twofold:

A) Just on aesthetic grounds: Good booze should be savored as a thing unto itself, like a fine wine. Mixing a nice whisky (which might cost $25 on up per litre) with a soft drink ($1/litre?) is like dipping caviar in ketchup, or taping up your original Botticelli with masking tape next on the fridge next to a NASCAR schedule.

(B) OK, enough of the hoity-toity stuff, as there are practical reasons. Masking liquor with soft drinks, in addition to tasting like shit and making you look like a complete Yahoo or girlie-man to any woman with half an ounce of class (or dude, if that's your thing--or, if you're a girl, that you're a bimbo--not sure what lesbians would think...), makes it harder to keep track of how much you're drinking. You're not really tasting any booze, so for all you know you're just drinking a few Cokes.

(3) Don't drink on an empty stomach.

(4) This kind of ties in with (1), but savor every drop of what you're drinking, appreciating the time and effort that went into making this good booze or wine. If you only drink beer, think about developing a taste for something other than mass-market shit, for the same reasons. Mentally get down on your knees and thank our human ancestors for figuring out how to make this nectar.

(5) Do (4) regularly but in moderation. Kind of rambling here, but oh well. This mainly applies to Americans: Our culture has a very puritanical approach to alcohol--it's something "naughty," a forbidden fruit, which is why, I think, there is so much binge drinking here--one approaches liquor in much the way one approaches all the other drugs: it's a way to cop a buzz, rather than something cultural and part of everyday life. If that's the way you see it, I urge you to try other, less damaging drugs. I think if we grew up drinking it the way other societies do, where ingesting alcohol is just a regular part of life, we would have fewer problems with people getting messed up from it. Despite all our ridiculous, puritanical regulations here, we have no lower a rate of alcoholism than our other Western counterparts (well, OK, except for Ireland...)--it truly is ridiculous that one can pretty much do anything--including getting blown to bits in Iraq--at 18 EXCEPT buy a god-damned drink. If that's not paternalism, I don't know what is.

(6) OK, back to more practical matters: If you're going to over-indulge, be very careful about doing so with someone you would never have any intention of having sex with when sober.

Oh, OK...back to the thread. I think the best drink I've ever had was a vodka martini--very simple, it was--in a hotel bar in San Antonio, Texas, in a place where Teddy Roosevelt hung out. The decor has hardly changed since then, and the voddie was an exquisite but not too pricey Polish one (Wodka Wybovora...or something like that), with just the merest hint of vermouth, a nod of an onion, and just the right amount of green olive (NOT a canned one).

The only point I'd have to add is that if you are going to drink alcohol, change types to try new ones periodically. Different things affect people in different ways. Some people have a real affinity to wine, or beer, or various forms of hard alcohol. Even though it's tempting to say any 80 proof spirit is basically the same as any other, that really isn't true. The trace impurities that give any spirit its taste (called congeners) vary from spirit to spirit. There are thousands of these congeners and everyone reacts to different ones differently. That's significant because congeners are compounds that, in larger concentrations, are essentially toxic to you, so you want to find the one(s) most suited to you. My ex found that the kindest thing to her system was quality vodka, my step father is comfortable with good wine, and I love tequila.

Again, that's only if you drink alcohol. Certainly nothing wrong with abstaining; it's cheaper and better for you.

1.Beer-Drank 12 last night, felt like I only had about 10-Anywho-Ice beer makes me puke-My favorite is Yuengling.Those 8% beers make me wanna puke!(Steel Reserve)(211)

2.Whiskey!-Jameson <--think thats how its spelled, anyway good stuff.Irish whiskey!-My favorite is Crown Royal.

3.The Martini question?!-I had one of these recently when I went to the OBX in NC.At a place called the Penguin Isle.Had 3 olives in it.Probaly the best one Ive ever had.And I really don't like these.Question is, is this a mans drink or a womans?

Heh, neither o'course! But they are good for cleaning grease off your engine block...

Actually, I'd say a cosmo would qualify as a woman's drink, but 007 used to love his Martinis
