quakecon is great if you like to wait long hours to enter a place packed with socially impaired young males with sweaty armpits and over 500+ logged hours of online quake, with stashes of pirated CDs and computer desktops with metal band logo stickers all over them.
So you have never been to quakecon????

quakecon's an evil capitalist event. he'd only go if it was 100% supported by the govt, private industry has no business doing things for people.  Donating time/money is evil.  Your leaders know what best for you (ie like starving to death, it's an honorable death).  If QuakeCon was a good idea, his govt. would of paid for his entire life to be spent training for it & he would be sent to represent the greatness of his people.

all i care about from this qconis rage, doom4 and doom3 source code. 

Are they expected to GPL id Tech 4 at QuakeCon?  Seems a bit soon for that technology to be freely available to the public.. I would imagine licensing it to other studios would still be profitable for the time being.

Short answer, hell no. I think he's trying to be funny.

Long answer:
The quake live engine is possibly more profitable in the future than tech4 because there seems to be a gradual shift in that direction for gaming. (Garage Games has released a version of an online 3d engine SDK to compete with it). So tech4 may go GPL earlier than expected if tech 5 and this webengine become more useful.

But short answer again... Hell no!


(P.S. Speaking of engines. Can we expect in our wildest dreams for q2world to have terrain and scripting support   ;D)

The engine already has a very basic form of terrain via the materials system.  Here's an extremely simple example; a lot more could be done than this 2-stage + lightmap blending:



Also, next time I have an hour or so, I'm going to add support for map models (e.g. static .md3 meshes like trees, cars, whatever.. via a misc_mapmodel entity).  Since I draw static .md3 from VBO, it should be possible to throw a hundred trees into a scene without crushing most hardware :)

As for scripting, probably not.  As it is, I've spent a *lot* of time cleaning up and enhancing the game module.  It's about half the size of baseq2, and is significantly more organized and consistent.  If people want to mod Q2W, it should provide a solid foundation for them.

Well, quake 3 source code (id tech 3) was announced on qcon 2005 and released the day after. on august 20th of 2005.  Look it up.  So id tech 4 could be announced this qcon.  Besides, no one's using id tech 4, it's been id's least successful engine, compared specially to quake3.

If we follow the pattern, we should expect id tech 4 to be open sourced after the first id tech 5 game is released.

Doom 3 was released a week or two before quakecon 2004.

At quakecon 2005, Doom 3 had been out for a year, and Quake 4 multiplayer was being demoed in the BYOC.

So.... When is rage coming out? 2009? If so, then we probably shouldn't expect id tech 4 open source before quakecon 2010....

Right?

Yeah, especially since the engine is still being used in quite a few commercial products (ETQW for example). Carmack is great, but he's no fool. Personally, I think the wait is worthwhile. People are just barely getting started with some more interesting q3 source mods.

Q3 was going to be released a year earlier but they delayed the release one year.   That woudl of been 5 years after Q3A was released.  If D3 is the same pattern that's 2009, at the soonest.  But considering there's no rage-engine games out i don't think it will happen.  D3 is still being used quite a bit (et:qw) and being updated.
