Quake 2 Demos to video
« on: April 11, 2008, 02:56:52 PM »
Hi all,

i was hoping somebody could explain how to turn Quake 2 Demos into videos so they can be uploaded to , lets say "youutuppe", and be easily watched here (on tastyspleen.net). Wouldnt that be cool?  At least spit out a link to a really userfriendly demoplayer. Or/and a video editing tool to mix some music under ther videos.

Demoplayer [2] is an easy to use program that will play quake 2 demos. (and demos from other games)
Aprq2 [1] will export demos as .avi's automatically, afaik. (if its set to do so)

You can also use fraps, then convert with VideoLAN VLC (windows movie maker which is free on xp is another option).

BeefQuake provides some good graphics for demo movie making too.

Well it's pretty tricky and time consuming and you need a beefy pc. I've always wanted to make a goofy movie of the funniest and stupidest Vanilla demos I have collected, but for that I'd have to cut, paste & crop many short demos with Keygrip first, then convert all of them to somewhat usable avi's and then finally edit them in VirtualDub. Brrrr.....
I've found that the best and easiest way to convert a demo to AVI is to hook the TV-out of a 3D card to a Video Capture card in another PC. You can then capture the video and sound directly. But of course this is not very practical since you need 2 pc's and a capture card....

I have tried Aprq2's 'aviexport' feature before and it does what it says but it recorded incredibly slow and I had trouble with choosing the right codec and all. I really like video editing but the whole process of converting the demos first scares me off.

Fraps is okay but I believe the free version of Fraps limits the recording to 30 seconds... VirtualDub is a free program for basic editing and processing of AVI files. http://www.virtualdub.org/ http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/

By the way, Bullz and [BTF]Reflex are the moviemakers here, I'm sure one of them will have some useful tips for you(?)

Hm... ok... so i downloaded seismovision and aprq2, but i cant figure out how to make avis.
In seismovision: do i have to execute media player as i play the demo and then just press  record?

Beefquake looks like not so good, same as q2e, egl and kmquake2 just doesnt work out for me.
Q2max doesnt even start.

Sure edeting takes some time, but for now i just want to upload a small demo uncut/raw, so everybody can just click and watch it in the forums-oh, yeah, that was the idea :)

Aprq2 is a pretty good choice
if u wanna make some videos.

I made 2 videos and they
r on youtube right now.

Lets say u have Aprq2 now and
a demo file u wanna convert.

Type this in console:
Aviexport 10 (demoname).dm2 (demoname).avi

10 is just the framerates in ur movie
and gets a faster converting.

Original is 25 so dont use it.

Its slow as hell and takes
too much hard drive space.

Im using 10 and it works good without lags.

Im working right now with a new
fragmovie for the loko mod.

Good luck.

Nice step by step clarification.

But it looks like i have a codec problem or something.
I did this:
 Aviexport 10 (demoname).dm2 (demoname).avi
Aprq2 ran the demo with 10 fps and saved the .avi in quake2 (exactly there).
I opened it in vlan and it looked like this:

all colors messed up and stuff  :dohdohdoh:
 Any ideas?

Media player is even worse...

And in both cases the sounds is pretty fragged up.
Could it be a problem with the A3D surround sound?

I would first use a lower resolution to keep the vidsize smaller, for instance 512x384. (type: gl_mode 2 )

then type:
avi_codecmenu (and pick a codec)
aviexport 15 <demo name> <avi name>
avistop (when done)

There are some other commands in aprq2's readme that could be useful.

Fraps has worked great for me.  You can just play the demo as usual, hit F9 during the playback, and boom, you have a video with audio.  Then use VideoLAN to convert to a codec like Divx to assure everyone can play it and it is small sized.

I make little movies like this in a few minutes if I had some funny event and I want to share it with people.
I've found it even easier than editing the *.dm2 file.

However, if you intend to create a high quality movie for wide dissemnation you will want to use the full version of Fraps which isn't limited to 30 seconds per recording and doesn't label the output with a "Fraps" tag.

Thats up:  aq2 doesnt show a list of codecs after i type "avi_codecmenu".
 me---> :fight: <---aq2

QUAKE CAPTURE
Not a problem, because i used this:
Maybe http://quakecapture.sourceforge.net/ would be any help. =]
I downloaded that: "Win32 versions of the id1 Quake1 and Quake2 engines with capture"
and had to rename the ref_gl.dll and quake2.exe that was in my c:/quake2. I Just added OOOOO for original.
Looks like this: ref_glOOOOOOO.dll and quake2OOOOOO.exe.
Then i copied the quake2.exe and ref_gl.dll into c:/quake2 or wherever Quake2 is.
Had to rename both again the OOO versions back to normal and the others +CAPTURE (ref_glCAPTURE.dll and quake2CAPTURE.exe)
There is a using.html in the download ( ts called quakecapture_bin_20040801.zip)too, which explains how to use it.

Once the .avi or .divx is ready after the demo stops it pops up in c:/quake2

VIRTUAL DUB
From there i dowloaded
VirtualDub is a free program for basic editing and processing of AVI files. http://www.virtualdub.org/ http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/
did some cuts, selected a compression method in options and it was divx or something, pressed F7, named it and uploaded it too *blatupe*....

ET VOILA
Well, here it is:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jz31H993ZJ4
 :yessign:

Virtualdub seems to be pretty cool. I saw a export animated .gif somewhere in the menus.Yeah!

Keygrip2
I used that years ago to make a demo. I think its a must have if you want to make good quake2 demomovies.
Its on Panjoos Page. Lots of good stuff there.

Thanks go out to ( in order of appearance):
