Hi, I don't think it's fair that I've been muted just because I abused my bind one day? This isn't fair. I see others doing worse than me all the time yet they aren't muted and it's the same people abusing it day in day out? Why aren't those people muted? I've even warned them that if they keep it up they're going to be muted but they just laugh it off saying nothing is going to happen to them. Are they friends of the admins or the Admins themself? What's next for this server? You gonna forbid talking all together and mute everyone? This is just not fair. I think part of the game is being able to talk smack if you want. No? I see the same people abusing their binds every day constantly yet nothing happens to them. I abuse it once and I'm muted? Do you call this fair?

Were you warned before you were muted?

That is normal protocol.

Nobody is allowed any special treatment regardless of who they are. If you see abuse happening without reactions that you can see (there may be reactions you can't see), it may be possible no admin is available to tend to the matter. If you were warned, you should know why you were muted. If you weren't warned, you should have been warned first.

Anyhow, is there somewhere in this post that is a statement that you will stop spamming repeatedly? i think a statement stating you wont do it again would be enough to have the mute removed. Feel free to post how you feel about this particular matter.

No I was never warned. I just noticed I was muted the next time I connected to the server. Had I been warned I would have stopped immediately. I'm not about spamming but it annoys me to death when I see the same people doing it day after day yet they never get muted. I'm pretty sure had they been warned or muted before they would not continue to spam. Not unless they just don't care? Listen, I'm not going to spam anymore but can I at least use a bind every now and then or is that not allowed either? BTW: Thanks for your reply and understanding!

What you're saying is probable and most likely true, but a post talking about the actions of others more than yourself isn't the best thing to do to make your story believable to the admins here.

I was there at the time and you were warned twice, but you were probably too busy spamming to see WallFly's warnings. So yes in this case it's fair. If an admin happens to see a flood of spam he sends out a polite warning or two and then the party is over. How would they know whether or not that was the 'first and only time' you abused your binds? If you ignore the admin's warnings or you don't know when to quit then it shouldn't come as a surprise that you got temporarily muted. I can imagine that it would suck to be muted so I hope for you the mute gets removed. As far as I understand the rules, using a bind every now and then is no problem as there are others who also hit the same bind every minute (which is annoying) but they don't send a flood of repetitive spam like you did, if they do and an admin sees them doing it they'll get the same treatment. Oh and please name a few people who are constantly spamming as much as you did.

Note, the reason the admin called you "devious" on your first warning, is because you had been playing using |iR|D3V!ous' name the other day. Later, we were able to determine that you and devious both swapped each other's names on that day... The point being, the admins called you "devious" because they saw that name on your IP, and initially guessed that might be your primary alias. Further investigation reveals your primary alias has been Snarfdumple.

Using a bind every so often, is different than hammering on the key and filling up the screen with pages of spam.

I really don't think you should act all innocent though. Your "Diseased Pussy" alias goes back several years, and we've muted you before.

Trust me, I'm not trying to act all innocent because I flat out admitted that I abused the bind. However, I really did not see the warnings. If I did I would have stopped. So, I apologize for that. Not that it makes it right but if you look closely a lot of those bind messages are 20-30 seconds apart if not more. They are not all just a few seconds apart so Its not like I was spamming constantly but when you put them all together like that it looks a lot worse than what it really was. Also, the only reason I used devious in the past as an alias was because he came on one day talking all kinds of smack to me all because I fragged the crap out of him with the BFG. Then he went into spectator mode and changed his name to "Suchit Deep" and then proceeded to talk all kinds of shit under my name yet nothing was done to him? I kept telling him that the Admin will know that he's not the real "Suchit Deep" just by his IP addy but he kept laughing it off saying "The Admin ain't gonna do anything". So, the next time I gave him a dose of his own medicine and I used his name. I know 2 wrongs don't make a right but I spoke to one of the Admin's about that issue and they said they were going to speak with Devious about it. Was that done? Who knows? All I know is that there are idiots like U|U|U that constantly spam the crap out of the server every 5 seconds with a bind saying "Ynuck, Ynuck, Ynuck" and other stuff yet nothing has happened to him because he still does it every single time he's on the server. Why hasn't he at the very least been temp muted? I even told him one day that I don't know how he's getting away with spamming the way he does and he just laughed it off. I think if you are going to enforce your muting rule you should be fair about it and enforce it across the board.

Who, indeed. In general our policy is to deal with name spoofing when we see it, usually by asking them to change their name and, later, if we remember, to check the database and see whether they are continuing to spoof other players' names. If they keep doing it, we have the ability to enact a name ban that restricts an IP or hostmask to only using a particular set of aliases.

There are currently 31 active mutes in the database. It's not like our favorite thing to do is sit around playing "internet nanny" watching dozens of servers. But if an admin is around, we tend to take action based on what we see going on on the server when we happen to be looking at the screen.

If you run into cases where someone is being repeatedly obnoxious and an admin doesn't seem to be around at the time, feel free to post a condump here on the forums showing an example of the objectionable behavior. Being able to see the condump helps me locate the incident in the server logs.

OK there are 30 active mutes now.

I absolutely understand that, although I wouldn't mind playing a nanny if I could add warning-mutes myself. Because something tells me that it's just the same handful of people that are deliberately causing trouble. Since those few have been doing it for a long time it's not very likely that an unconvincing condump is going to get them a temp mute. The problem with condumps here is that most of the people who're always being a pain know exactly how far they can go without overdoing it like this 'Suchit Deep' guy. But like he said those people keep hitting the same old binds every 20-30 seconds or so and it goes by unnoticed. I have condumped a lot of this crap and have also recorded a fair amount of incredibly lame spam demos that I won't bother to put up since they're pretty old, besides all that will probably do is make me look like the little bitch.
I have noticed that when people do get warned they tend to stop spamming and say they're sorry, only to continue it the next day or the day after until they get their next warning (most likely from a different person). In other words a lot of these people get away with it and never suffer any real consequences. In my opinion a much more effective approach would be to skip the warnings altogether but make sure they have your attention by saying: "OK <Playername>, you have crossed the line and for that we are going to MUTE you for XX hours. Next time less spamming in the chat please" and then actually mute them for xx hours because these hardheads will never get the message otherwise.

Hmmmm.... I'll bet an automated solution could be coded to monitor the overuse of lengthy binds like that and perform a selective mute (using q2admin's chatban... yay, another q2admin dependency...

This wouldn't interfere with short binds like "lol" or smiley faces or short words that are common for everyone to say. But the idea is that the code could watch for longer repetitive binds, and after some threshold, issue a chatban that would effectively disable that bind for awhile.

Hmm, might be fun to try...

PANJ, Thanks! This is the person I was talking about. The condump you captured is revealing somewhat what I was talking baout but there have been times where that person just goes on and on with that same bind over and over every few seconds. I'm glad you were able to at least find some instance of him abusing that stupid bind of his. Also, I want to thank console for unmuting me. I promise not to abuse my binds anymore. I know how annoying it can get at times. Thanks again Panj & Console.
