I'd definitely recommend Half-Life for the single player.
World of Warcraft.
well, since nobody else would preview them, I guess I'm left with CS and variations. If you purchase CS thru steam, you'll probably spend the whole 20 bucks and get Condition Zero and Deleted Scenes.(It's actually a waste not to..)If you are down for playing pub games ad naseum, and you don't mind the loss of a lot of movement freedom, CS 1.6 is actually quite fun and challenging, and there are tons of servers and players left.CS: Condition Zero is rather like a single player version of the purely multiplayer CS.You still play terrorists vs CT, but this time you're forced to the CT team, and you have a variety of missions to complete whilst choosing a team of bots to back you up. As you beat more missions (generally by doing 2-3 tasks and winning so many rounds) you can "purchase" better bots for your team to help offset the difficulty progression of the Terrorist bots. This game feels distinctly like a training ground for CS players.Condition Zero Deleted Scenes is something entirely different. It is more like a Single player version of Counterstrike than any of the other incarnations.Unfortunately the missions are rather disjointed and you don't get any feeling of real accomplishment because they don't follow a definite plot direction. They're just missions to beat, in a certain order (with a team or not) against ridiculous odds, whilst using stealth, navigating some maps that are very SP feeling, and trying not to die at all.
3) System Shock 2
To make a serious suggestion, FPS have 2 historical common factors that make them great, one more than the other. First and most focused on today is new engine features. However new engines in todays world go obsolete quicker than a cellphones. The real test of time has always been original weaponry. Think about all the big names and what made them that way.Duke3d, Redneck Rampage, Serious sam, Blood, Postal 2, Heretic, Hexen, Turok 2, ad. nasium. It's always about the weapons. Heck Quake 2 invented the railgun (and in effect instagib) and name a single game now that doesn't rip it off. That's one of the biggest parts of Quake2's success was the new and improved weapons while still keeping the Doom2 nostalgia alive. So as for great weapons games that I'd actually broke down and shell out money for is Painkiller and Postal 3, whenever it comes out.
1) Quake , new sp map packs being released these days are just friggin' jaw dropping with the Darkplaces Engine backing them up.
