If your going with bass, I'd recommend the American Standard Fender Jazz bass. I've had mine for years. It's my baby.

No. You're wrong. My Les Pauls could eat any ibanez for breakfast. If I could afford it, I would buy myself a Custom ESP (drool...) those things are AMAZING.

Bigwig: The Explorer is THE blackmetal guitar. What do you play it through? Also, what do you think about its tone? I played one once and found it to be a little thin sounding, though that's good for BM.

you got a good point about not buying expensive gear if you're not gonna keep playing, cuz if you don't keep playing it, you're just wasting your money.

What sort of amp are you using? The built in distortion stinks on most cheap amps (except line 6, but the tone shaping capapbilities are VERY limited) To get really good distortion, you usually have to spend a fair bit and spring for a name brand amp, like mesa or marshall. Also, do yourself a favor and dump the solid state shit. You will NEVER get as good distortion with solid state as you will with some big fat 6L6 tubes. Now that I've got my mesa, my distortion boxes spend most of their time collecting dust, because that amp has gain like you wouldn't believe. (usually for live situations, I have to turn the gain to about 5, otherwise it's just too much).

However, If you don't feel like spending $1400 for a mesa, I recomend buying one or two good stomp box distortions. My first one was the Boss DS-1, which is a good all around pedal (especially for 50 bux), although it's pretty noisy. I've never really used Boss's other distortions, because they don't have true bypass, so i tend to lose alot of the higher frequencies. The Ibanez tube screamer is a classic, though I don't have a whole lot of experience with it. DOD has a pretty good line of distortions too. If you feel like dropping the money for a REALLY good distortion pedal, mesa, marshall, and Electro Harmonix all make tube distortion units. The mesa one can also double as a recording preamp, so you can just go direct to the board.

Its a standard ion amplifier, not that great, tho fairly loud! when i turn it up full including the drive/gain (distortion) it makes the floor and windows shake and nearly gives me a heart attack. my cousin who's been playing for a good 3 years said its not a bad built in distortion, but instead of spending on pedals, i want an amp like his, its so hot, line 6 spider something or other, its bloody huge and got TONS of effects

I've played a spider, but I generally have a problem with modeling amps. I'd rather have the real thing than a copy, no matter how good. I also believe that effects belong in the rack and on the floor, not in the amp. I like to maintain as much control over where my signal goes as possible. If I wanted an effects processor, I would have bought an effects processor not an amp. I don't really like having a bunch of extraneous shit in my signal path, so that i can maintain as much control over my tone as possible.
