True.... Come to think of it, I typically explore maps w/out being connected to a remote server.
I use:

bind - "noclip"

...so the minus key toggles noclip mode.  I fly to where I want, then hit - to drop to the floor.

I like the hook just to explore bits of maps the designers never intended you to see.Like that one q2dm map that has the boxes on the conveyor belt that you ride to where the bfg is...you can hook up through the bay window in the ceiling to the conveyor above and run around in the UNspace.Then ride the conveyor back down to the bottom again.

actually you can get there with a rocket jump... funny shit if youve got the rail in a packed warehouse server (i do it on mages all the time)

Hook is great...as long as its not turned up to ultra speed. I like the SConfig hook best of all...WOD Hook with tarzan off next....then laser style hook last. In mod's like the now almost dead Chaos....Hook was a very nice feature along with a anti-grav belt you could toggle.....Made for some really fun play. But I play almost all mod's so I'm down either way. Hook is voteable on the {KEA} tourney server.
