well here's what I did to get people off of vanilla and onto mutant.

hmm since the xquake sever seems to be gone (am I wrong?) there is a simple fix for that, put vanilla back to the way it is supposed to be
I go to mutant to get away from the bad vanilla maps, getting rid of mymap on vanilla, putting the various rails back in random places on the maps, would suit me fine

1.  the new mymap function does wonders for this scenerio.  find a single player map you like the most (ware2 works for me) and just keep voting on it each time it loads up. 

2. mymap commands you know all that stuff you see.. +ia -pu +ip etc.. use those to add a twist of annoyance to the game.  I like to use (ware2 +ia) and stay in the railgun room with my chaigun flaring away.  that 50 frag limit seems like chump change in that scenerio.

these simple 2 steps caused a lot of drama on the server and a lot of goto commands issued.

I expected some abuse of the mymap command at some point--I've already warned crusty about doing mymap space over and over--but so far most players seem to have been displaying uncommon courtesy when using the command.

I definitely would have asked you not to abuse the command if I'd been online at the time.

I'm still having trouble processing the idea that your stated intention was to render the experience of playing on the server so distasteful to the regulars that they departed in droves.

Anyway... I guess it's time to make time to start coding anti-abuse measures into the script....

the only downside to the commands is that when you use them in one map, they don't work in the next map.  I've even tried using different commands and once the modified dmflags map is over, it reverts back to normal server setting dmflags.

It's a bug with the rapid-fire approach the script uses to first set dmflags back to defaults, then set custom flags an instant later.  I'll have to combine them and just send the command once.

I'm not sure it's officially gone.  It may be.  Sometimes when it crashes, the owner of the server can't be reached for a week or two to restart it.  I emailed him as soon as xquake went down... but this is the longest the server has been down that I know of, and I haven't gotten a reply from him.  I'll email him again.  If it's really gone for good, we could start an xquake facsimile on tastyspleen.

What if mymap refused to play a map, if it had already been played within the past hour or two?

BTW, I think I can get the rails/rockets remapping going even with mymap, with a little coding.  But I could put them back right now - it would just mean +pu wouldn't work with mymap for now.  If the rails/rockets remapping is more desirable than having +pu work, we can restore them immediately.

I rather enjoyed having the extra railgun (there were RL's too?) on different maps, was cool =)  And I've never been a big fan of quad/invuln, so I doubt I'll miss that much =)

+pu is the only way a true Q2 player should play..

i laugh at people who run by the quad..  since you're being dumb enough to run by an item programmed into the game.. why don't you just run by the megahealth, armour, and railgun while you're at it.. Quad SSG disposes of all the servers railwhores in a blink of an eye.

PLEASE don't make it so we can't mymap the same map over again!  Or... if you do... at least make the timelimit WAY less than an hour.  I've kind of abused the command myself, but no more than three times in a row and I [hope] it didn't scare anyone off.  Once the average player knows how to use the command they can stop an abuser in their tracks!  Anyways, sometimes it's nice to play the same map twice, especially if it's just you and a few other people who agree.  Perhaps you could add a command that someone could type that would essentially stop a map from repeating or being played too often... like "mymapsucksass" or something....

just a thought...

Imagine someone voting in space (the low gravity single player map) with a 50+ fraglimit.  Space is horrible, especially if you come off of the fact3 which is a fast, tighter map.  Of course 3rd party maps can always be worse.
