A keypress timer is a simple bind to have the game play a wav file.  So, when you pickup the red armor you press a key and a 20 second wav file plays.  Most of the wav is quiet, but after say 15 seconds it might sound off "armor in 5 4 3 2 1 0" to let you know when the armor will respawn. 

An automatic timer is the same but you don't have to press a key.  And, some timers use on-screen readouts rather than just sounds.

Many people don't think they should be included in the game.  While there are many others who use them.  Thus, this thread and the q2players thread.

Hmmmm.... I started out playing CTF, and the use of timers was standard so I never even questioned the ethics of using them.  I personally only have a 30 and 60 second quad timer ("Quad back in 60 seconds" - in a British accent.. or is it Aussie... i think it's Aussie... kiwi?) that I occasionally coopt into a weapons/armor timer, not very useful for armor though... 

I dunno, I don't think it's a big deal.  I don't think automated timers should be allowed, but normal timers I think are fine.  Some might say it doesn't take any skill to "press a button" but based on my own experience using timers it certainly takes a little bit of learning to do it effectively.  I can't even keep track of all the damn binds I have now.  I have almost no idea what the majority of my keys actually do.  To hit a specific timer and deal with fighting/running/nervous excitement going on would certainly take a little while to master and therefore would be a "skill".  One of these days I would like to actually learn it.

That being said I can understand why it's considered cheap in 1vs1.  It gives such an advantage and can be really annoying to play against.   However, since they are impossible to regulate and considered fair in teamplay I think we should all get used to the idea they're going to be used in duels and instead of whining about it just use them ourselves.

ive used timers in FFA... i think its kinda funny to control all the armor and mega on edge with like 15 people runnin around nekkid

Maybe we could have a rule that timers are not to be used in our 1on1 tourneys?  It couldn't be enforced, but I think most people here don't have them anyway, and of those that do at least a few wouldn't use them out of respect.  Or maybe just agree before a match whether or not you *should* use them with your coming opponent, and if the person refuses NOT to you just have to deal with it and get your own.  At least that way you know they even have them and can adjust.

I dunno... just a thought...
