I use two background images and just cycle thru them here adn there. BTW these r scrolled down, my current resolution is 1280x1024 but the pics r scaled down to 1024x819..

I do have GL, my cpu is just too slow. We're only at 30% windows proprietary drivers speed. Since nvidia doesn't make the 3D driver for BeOS, one man does it himself without their help. it's really hard, but its open source.

If your CPU is too slow, then why run an OS still under heavy development still? I the idea behind BeOS is nice and all, but why not just run a flavor of linux? I don't get that.

Because linux has a problem. There are too many options, and since they'res not really one focus, everyone does their own thing and so then you get a little bit of everything in every place, poorly and half-way done. Linux was designed in pre-historic time of 1991 and is based on a command line, and patching on a gui is therefore slow and un-responsive. Besides looking like a technical drawing, it is often bloated beyond belief with packages and applications the end-user will never touch or use. BeOS, on the other hand was built from the ground up with the end-user in mind, while linux was designed for those with doctorates in computer engineering, and it is expected of them to use linux, not a computer end-user. BeOS is multithreaded and has a microkernel with low response times and a fast gui. In terms of technical, BeOS is not under heavy development. Haiku is under heavy development. I do run Mandriva linux on a 512MB 200GB maxtor 1.4ghz system, but it is slow as a dog, and has many problems with things going wrong all the time. The only reason I have it is for the canon i320 to use turboprint and openoffice and opera for my sister and parents to use as their computer.

I second that.

Ubuntu has been the easiest for me to learn on and use. And it comes with Gnome, which I like better than KDE.

I tried Mandriva a couple different times in it's life cycle, it was slow as hell and hard to configure.

i was thinking about trying it too
i tried mandriva once before and it didnt seem to detect and do setup stuff properly
being my first time trying linux, i had so clue what so ever what i was doing

but im gunna wait ill the next version comes out in the next month or 2
