I would agree. It really hurts the dm server --WHICH MAY BE BETTER IF ROTATION WERE RANDOM to hinder map rotation campers.
No focus on map, bfg and camper oriented definitely not leet player friendly with few jumps and ability to outskill players nothing really works ---the ring around cross of the bfg, the rail room , chaingun room is a dead end to the least travelled part of any map(water tube to back of map), etc etc
although it does offer a different challenge and slightly different skill set to be able to win this --and all the dm maps in a row

i see things from a noob and ffa perspective.
and i love dm4, big surprise! It is basically two maps that could be broke into two for better/faster play, but i enjoy it as it is.
i love playing with/against the bfg, and it is easy access, so its fun. It promotes campers at the rail, and i love campers/removing them, etc. i prefer dm4 above dm5 and dm7 for sure!

One aspect of the map that i enjoy is what some dont like. The size. It is big enough you can't hear across it at all. i'd say it is the one map that plays more uniquely then all the others each time you play it. And i notice people play it "more" differently. Each player seems to choose different things to focus on, and its fun to learn what different people are into trying to control, and how they are setting priorities on the map. Most of the other maps, every game is a near replay of the thousands of games on it before. DM4 gives SO many options of things to do and try as far as route running, learning opponents routes and playing it against them, controlling items at long distances (quad, red armor/health, yellow armor, keeping rail room camp free). Only map that compares in this manner is DM8, but since it is easier to rail across it, it is more liked. About the only difference imo.

When Quake 2 was under development Id and the community was experimenting with higher player count servers in Quake 1 such as big CTF matches. So, for Quake 2 I suspect dm4 was an attempt at a larger map like dm5 and 8. With the speed and jumping of players now days, even these maps can feel "small".
It does feel like a third of the time the DM server is on q2dm4!

It probably does spend the most time on dm4. I think the frag rate is lower on that map because most players are wandering through all the hallways. Plus a lot of people disconnect when it comes up so there aren't as many players. It's such a letdown after dm3.

I still prefer dm4 to almost all of the maps on mutant --which are one sided king of the powerposition maps.
But fraglimit on railz is 40 now, and variable for vanilla, maybe we could set differing fraglimits on the maps --40,30,50,30,40,40,30,50 respectively(just blabbering on a thread --not yet another request of the tastyspleen managment

DM4 is a great map for less skilled players and newbie players alike. Three reason why it is golden:
1: Less skilled players have a real shot at getting a good amount of frags on that map so in that respect it is fair to keep it around.
2: New players and bad players will only get better when given a chance to move off the spawn pad
3: The way I see it is. Let them have DM4 and we can be assured of a continuing Q2 community.

I like a few things about dm4 but it's not my favorite map by a longshot...
I'll try listing my opinions about it in 2 groups:
pros:
1. You get nearly a minute to run around picking up gear before you actually find anyone worthy of fighting...
2. With a quick run from ssg to mega you can be toting, a 2 good guns, 190+ health, a decent amount of ammo, and a quad with 10 seconds or so left on it...
(if all goes well)
3. Rail is easy to camp and so it doesn't dominate the weapon choice on this map
4. Annoying RL placement makes this weapon harder to get and control, than most stock maps.
5. a long jump from quad over the rotating platform to SSG someone in the face on their way by = priceless.
cons:
1. Mega and RA switching is way gay. they should be in 2 different spots.
2. Long hallways of boredom, punctuated with surprise nades in the face over by the GL area..
3. Not enough Bullets in highly travelled areas. CG with 50 bullets is fucking useless against anyone with armor and a clue
4. BFG in the center of a main intersection. Bah! way too easy to get compared to the other 1-hit multi-kill weps..
5. Hyperblaster is fairly inaccessible and the BFGs eat all the ammo for it.. I love this gun and it's rarely used on this map for very long.
All in all, I like some of the map but I think it could be squished down a bit and have the items shuffled up to make it more enjoyable for fast paced FFA DM.
For TDM, it's way too easy to hide in and the long distances from one point to another make it nearly impossible to control items.. If it had more room to get up a bit of jumping speed, and less of those damn 90 degree turns in the hallways, you could probably cover ground a lot faster.
