Why do we dream?
« on: January 17, 2007, 04:23:31 PM »
What do you think?

This is the thread to share your theories (or bring up existing theories) and maybe share some dreams that you remember having... did you ever think about why you may have dreamed about this particular situation?

There are many theories out there and I'm not sure what to think myself... but I think they're about the past, present, and future. Like for example, I had to pass a test sophomore year called the CAPT and they really stressed me out. If I failed, I wouldn't be able to graduate and in order to graduate, I'd have to take a CAPT prep course (and ugh, that's the last thing I wanted) so I had nightmares about failing it and whatnot.

So most of my dreams relate to what I did that day... or past experiences, and sometimes I even dream about the future. (and to some extent, they come true! or maybe what they represent come true...) But then again I believe some of my dreams involve my unconscious thoughts.

My dreams are so crazy and random sometimes... carnivals, summer camp, playscapes, me as a secret agent, and random strangers that end up being my sidekick/ally throughout my dream. and many times, I have conflicts with other people in them, so maybe these dreams represent particular conflicts I have in real life...

I dunno, share your thoughts so we can have an intellectual discussion.

"In sleep he sang to me... in dreams he came..." (sorry, I don't have a better picture for this topic, lol)

I certainitly don't believe the dreams are 100% psychological... then again, I don't believe that they are totally 'other' either.

Mostly, I see it as being a state of mind where you are more open to both your subconcious thoughts, but also to that waking eyes cannot see. Lucid dreaming is a reality, as are shared dreams. Prophetic dreams also come into account.

Hell, a lot of Lovecraft's stories come from his dreams. I can't accept that they were totally products of his own imagination, and I'm more inclined towards the side that states an alternate, though substantial, reality.

But our unconscious sides do play into that, and there are dreams that are purely internal. Then again, there are those that aren't. ;)

Dreams are random firings of the brain while it goes into REM sleep. The thinking part of the brain attempts to interpret these impulses as images and sounds - hence the mixed up nature of dreams. It is not the "royal road to the unconscious" as Freud pontificated. Sleep is necessary for mammals to rest the body and the brain.

Actually, I will say something about me and dreaming..

firstly I pretty much only dream if I fall asleep with my ipod on, (even though if I do that, I won't hear my alarm, thus be late for college - I don't do it on purpose!), but compared to when I used to not even listen to music, the dreams are much more vivid.. is that even possible? the music influencing the dream? I tend to remember most/a lot of the dreams I do have..

another thing I find, is if i'm thinking about something a lot while i'm going to sleep, I tend to dream about something like that..

I rarely ever dream. The only time I dream is when I'm sick. Normally after chugging a bottle of robitussin in attempt to rid my cold ( ;) ). When I do dream and under those circumstances, my dreams are totally whacked and will stick in my mind all day asking myself, wtf? I don't like dreaming really.

yeah tussin dreams can be xtreme, with or without a whole bottle even  ;)

cant be random, just this morning i was having trouble sleeping (dog howling) and i forced myself back into the same dream at least 5 times, once after having been awake for about 20 mins

I dream every night and my dreams are always very vivid and realistic.
I always remember every detail in the morning as well.

My dreams are usually about 3 things.... Fighting, Sex, or Natural Disasters.

The cool thing about my dreams is that I almost always am in control...
Like I always get away from the disaster, and I always win the fight!
And the sex dreams are usually pretty damn good to if ya know what I mean.  lol

But now and then I have a bad dream about my animals dieing... and those ones are usually the ones I can't control.  :(  I wish I knew more about why we dream too.

I will share one of my 'on going dreams'

Its nothing all that spectacular, but it get the same one every time i get really stressed out.  The best I can describe is that I absolutely HAVE to count to say .... 100,000,000 - before i can carry on with what i was doing before.  But its not just that, its a really paralyzing feeling like i weigh 1,000 pounds and cant move at all.

I don't really like this dream all that much. It has a tendency to stick with me for a few hours afterwards.

BtW, I like this thread - good idea :D

I had a dream last night that I was eating a giant, white marshmallow.

When I woke up my pillow was gone.

BTW the brain tries to inhibit any movement of the hands, legs etc when in active REM sleep to keep the person from hurting themselves. You can see this in pets when they are dreaming by the twitch in their legs etc. Otherwise they'd tear across the room and run into the wall - fleeing from an imaginary enemy.

or chasing a dream-squirrel...

I feel like that sometimes when I have quasi-paralyzed dreams..
I'll be fighting with some dude in my dream and my arm will feel like it's made of lead and my feet won't leave the ground when I try to dodge... Or I'll have to get somewhere and be unable to run..

I tend to wake up from these dreams tied up in my blankets with my arm completely asleep and tingly from laying on it.

The dreams I always remember are the ones that get to me the most.

I always dream my teeth are falling out like crazy. I always dream that something is chasing me and I cannot run. I also always have sex dreams that get interrupted somehow, which always pisses me off.

I swear, the Dental Association, Nike Shoe company and Porn Industry are behind all this mind control and I am making them rich. My Dreams are pure capitalism. I even have tried to jump into the fray, but my wife has issues with becoming a porn star. She must be a commie!!

I've heard a couple times that when you have dreams that your teeth are falling out, it means you are concerned about a lie that you've told recently to someone you know. It seems a bit coincidental though, and everybody worries and everybody lies, so it could just be BS..

I have dreams about losing teeth about once every month or two, and they're way too realistic for my tastes!
