From a coding standpoint - do you realize how easy it is to hack an open source game regardless of the anticheat? Anything can be emulated and faked. This is a few hour project for an experienced hacker.

Indeed.  I've often wondered why so many people act like there's only a handful of hacks out there.  I believe there are literally dozens upon dozens of one-off cheats.  Any novice programmer could put together a Quake2 cheat in very little time.

I agree with you on that point Jay.
all it takes is a teency bit of skill at coding in C and the motivation to do so for a couple hours and bugtest your beast on a local server.

It's not like they are crafting a whole new mod or something.
an aimbot isn't much more than a simple function that modifies your input to the game before it gets sent to the server. you just add a bit of code to catch the in-game event that turns it on, to the client (like an enemy traveling thru a certain field of your vision very near to your crosshair) and have that code call a function and send it your aim values to adjust. It fixes the aim values to a value nearer to that of the visible enemy's hitbox and sends them to the server as your input.. and poof. you're hackin.

to get around anticheat, which I don't really think anyone has the motivation to try, you'd still have to build this aimbot into a hacked version of r1q2 and find a way to get it to send normal values to the anticheat server when it checks your client for version info and filesize etc..

To my knowledge, no one has successfully done this yet, and there's a damn good chance that R1CH is already a few steps ahead of anyone working with his code to do so.

for what purpose? so you can get the satisfaction of winning when you shouldn't be because you suck? pretty sad really. the people that are proud of themselves because their computer kicks ass at quake2.

and this is exactly why anticheat.dll is absolutely the best anticheat that will most likely ever be available for q2.

i wont get into why, but ac will catch even wallers with custom written wh's.  Its been happening already, and will continue.

If you want a cheat free environment, get everyone you know to use anticheat.dll.

You are of course 100% correct that anything can be emulated or faked.  Ultimately, the server has no choice but to believe whatever the client tells it.

However, it's worth noting that r1ch's anticheat takes steps that should make it a lot harder to hack than previous anticheat clients.  Indeed, if you can think of how you might approach hacking anticheat, I'd recommend discussing your ideas privately with r1ch, to make sure they're covered by the current design.

That said, anyone who understands how microprocessors, networks, and operating systems work at a basic level, will understand intuitively that it's simply theoretically impossible to devise an unhackable client-side anticheat system.  I'll admit, I'm never sure what to tell people who don't understand the fundamentally unsolvable nature of the problem.  (For example, I've always known how to write an aimbot that simply cannot be detected client-side.)

Nevertheless, r1ch's anticheat.dll is far more sophisticated than any previous solution for quake2 we've had, and the fact that r1ch is currently engaged on the project and updating it on a regular basis adds to the difficulty of a hacker successfully circumventing it.

Even though in the limit, it's simply impossible to make an unhackable anticheat, r1ch's anticheat architecture is useful and definitely worth our support.

You do realize this:

1) Locks you into running Windows if, for nothing else, just to play Quake2.

2) Dismisses the hard work of many engine developers who target other platforms.

I know Quadz understands the potential impact of forcing any client, and would probably never do so.  But I just wanted to educate the rest as to why it's a bad idea.

Wow - so explain how exactly someone is able to predict, (over and over) when you make a jesture from at Bottom RL to Ele and they're by mega ledge with rail. We're talking about a jesture, no footstep sounds, no showing yourself, just moving a slight bit as if you might start to go, but you don't and they shoot. Do please explain the simplicity of that.
