An important warning for all Windows users..
« on: December 19, 2006, 09:14:48 AM »
No matter what Microsoft Windows update tells you, DO NOT DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL INTERNET EXPLORER 7.

The first time it automatically updated while I was at work, and I came home to a very confused mother-in-law and a completely fuxored computer that would only boot, all the way, into windows safe mode, and then only once.
I was able to use the system restore utility to revert my settings and programs back to an earlier date and everything was back to normal (suddenly my cable connection was there again, my network devices were capable of being polled, windows would boot all the way, virusscan and firewall started working again and the system wouldn't hang up like it had been doing)

Then yesterday, I came home from work, and those fuckers had once again stuffed me with another high-priority system destroying update to IE7. Now my computer hangs after 5 minutes of trying to start in safe mode and reboots itself after a total system failure at 6 minutes!

I'm gonna have to wipe the partition and reinstall the whole shebang now, and I'm getting ready to send Mr. Gates a care package full of ebola-laced-chocolates for christmas.  :ohreally:

I looked around the net, and it seems I'm not the only one this has happened to among the millions of windows users and I even found a utility made by microsoft to block automatic update from forcing this piece of crap on you!
why they would still be sending the update out, when they know for a fact that it will destroy your windows installation, I do not know, but at least those bastards made a fix for it.

search up the "Microsoft IE7 blocker toolkit" on google, download and install it to prevent windows update from forcing this piece of shit down your throat.

You won't regret it.

I never have automatic updates setup on my personal computer, always custom install. Even at work I have setup a update server so my workstations don't get unwanted items installed. Gives me the ability to review the updates before pushing them out to the workstations.

If you're going to manually update your computer then make sure you do a custom update and un-check IE 7.0. Do not install it, it's junk in my opinion. I used the beta and was not very impressed. There is a lot of useless security features that will only limit your experience on the internet. It also is a major resource hog. I don't recommended it what so ever.

dont tell people to stop using something cus only you and a few people have had problems

iv installed IE and recent updates for it (even though ill never touch IE again  :righteous:)
and iv never had any of the issues you have had

you dont need a special program to disable automatic updates, just go into services and do it from there
i highly suggest everyone do it so you dont get updates you dont want and it doesnt bug ya about it

use something like autopatcher to get updates, iv been using it for a year and a half without problems
its released every month with new updates. however it takes them a bit after the updates have been released to update it

im still waiting for december :O

fine then! you guys can come pick thru my registry and remove IE and all of it's detritus!

I just want my computer to make it all the way thru a boot cycle! but NOOOO.
Microsoft has decided that I don't get to have a working computer anymore.
 :P

and it wasn't just a few people...
every site I could find for the first 2 pages of search results was chock full of people with computers that either wouldn't boot, couldn't find their internet connection for various reasons, or now had a browser that would crash with more than one window open. all of which was directly related to the settings that get changed when they wipe out your IE 6 installation with this POS.

Sorry to hear about that dervish. I had one pc at my daughter's clinic that I hadn't "fixed" where autoupdate wouldn't work but it didn't end up that bad. I went around and made sure everything was manual and then the first time it tried to add it to the que, I unchecked it and told it to never show it to me again. Makes it where I have to manually check stuff more often and winders bitches about it but that's better than having the problems you did.. :(

Oh. It doesn't matter what browser you use either (I use firefox on everything - win or linux) it'll still screw winders up. Be glad when it finally goes belly up. (totally from an admin viewpoint guys)

I guess I had better luck than you.

IE 7 works just fine with me, although I use Firefox 2.0 the most.

ITS YOUR FAULT not MS.

I've had a simple Windows Update render my system non-bootable before.  It's not always user error.

Fortunately I had a recent backup.  Nowadays, I make a point to run a full backup of my system drive before installing ANY Windows Updates.

My current XP system has been up 148 days and counting, under heavy use.  This is the most stable it's ever been.  I'll definitely make a backup of it just like it is now before I install the boatload of updates it's been pestering me about.

indeed if you know how to use windows properly you will never run into these problems, or get a virus or spyware ever
no firewalls here either, i trust no one will attempt anything after thats been said

i use avg and spybot, iv maybe had 2 trojans this whole year and the only spyware i get is in my cookies
which isnt very lethal spyware at all. i cant say i havent been hacked. but im positive theres a very slim chance that it will ever happen

internet security is pretty much 75% hype

Ok you have no idea what you're talking about here. I never said I used a special program to disable the updates. I mentioned I have configured a update server to update 40+ workstations. It gives me the ability to review updates then push them to the workstations without having my users install updates themselves or use automatic updates.

Lemonzest from the crap you spit in IRC to me your experience and knowledge of Windows or computers in general is limited. I did not mention anything regarding spyware or viruses. I never had a problem what so ever with IE 6.0. I don't believe IE 7.0 is worth the upgrade yet, I was not overly impressed with it so I choose not to upgrade. I will recommend to others not to upgrade yet as well. It's a recommendation, I'm not telling anyone what to do. Whirling did not fuck up his computer because he doesn't know Windows. The installation to IE 7.0 is fairly simple even my mother could do it. The fact is the installation fucked up his computer, it wasn't HIS FAULT, it was Microsoft's FAULT. So do me a favor and shut the fuck up noob.  :humm:

If you right click My Computer, go to Properties, then select the Automatic Updates tab you can click the radio for Notify me but don't automatically update or install them. Then you can choose which ones to update and install. Just use a pirated version of Windows and you wont have to worry about Internet Explorer getting updated because the legit check will fail.

so in other words, SHUT UP and quit whining. ITS YOUR FAULT not MS.
* Lemonzest steps off the soap box

I used to have a list of offsets in system32 dynamic link libraries I debugged using SoftIce (kernel debugger) to create fixes for myself, every time I had to re-install windows I had to patch these files in safe mode to become compatible with my hardware or my OS wouldn't boot. I emailed Microsoft about the problems and they would never respond. That system ended up getting burned up due to bad electricity so I ended up getting a new one which doesn't have any problems. Not everything is perfect, especially not everything from Microsoft. Just take a look at vanilla Windows XP (without service packs), you get on the internet with that and you will end up with the blaster worm in seconds (which forces a system shutdown (not enough time to get the security updates)) without a firewall or security updates due to the DCOM exploit.

I don't worship the devil. Jesus is Lord, friend. He died for your sins. He will forgive you if you just ask.
