you are correct however that i dont need a special program to get updates, however i was suggested the program because it was much better than any of the ways microsoft has provided

I forgot to make sure that I set the Automatic Updater to "off" after the first time they got me and I had to do a system restore, so I'd say that was definitely my fault. The fact that IE7 renders my computer unusable however is not.

The point is, I shouldn't have to fear my updates.
Automatic or manual.

If I'd manually chosen to install this update, my computer would be just as busted right now.
It's not like it came with a warning label that said "Use this untested crappy software and it will fuxor your OS!"
Actually it came with the standard MS misinformation page that tells you how much better/safer/faster it is than the previous version, and offers you very few alternatives other than hitting the "OK (fuck me!)" button.

I really don't see why anyone would defend a company who would send out a High-priority update to an OS that is mostly untested and obviously flawed, and blame the user for installing it.

of course it's not a good idea to have a firewall. windows has never had any security problems.

untested? probably. but i dont think even microsoft is stupid enough to release an update that destroys your computer

its all mostly hype, if its as bad as they say it is, then i everyone that i know would have been hacked by now

HUGE exploits, worms infected almost every XP user at least once worldwide. Still effects many. Users with a properly configured firewall would have been safe.

More like Microsoft added a couple of new methods into the install script to prevent it from being installed on illegitimately licensed versions. Only took about 30 minutes of debugging to figure out. Once it's installed there are no more checks. Same with Windows Media Player 11.

..my copy of WinXP Pro SP2 is completely legit. bought it from best buy about 3 months ago to replace my pirated copy when my HD failed without warning.

I still have the damn box!

I run a server os for my daily use, mainly because i beta test for Microsoft, i run most consumer stuff like IE7 and WMP11 on it, and other things that are XP ONLY and disallow use on Server OS's, i make add ons for nLite and also provide help on MSFN/Neowin, don't mistake spelling and grammar errors for stupidity because you'll be greatly mistaken. been using pc's from the GEM/MSDOS 3.1 days, know windows inside and out.

I use Internet Explorer 7 as my primary browser, and aside from having to manually edit the registry to be able to make my Menu bar appear above the address bar, I'm quite content with IE7. With IE7, mIRC, uTorrent, AVG, AIM, and my desktop snow program I'm still only running at 250MB of page file usage. It's all about personal preferences...that's it. I personally find IE7 every bit as stable as IE6 was, but can easily handle switching to Opera/FF if I had to. Overall, I think the more you know about computers in general, the better your internet surfing experience is going to be.
