Sticky: How to get better at playing 1v1

Are there any hpb's interested in 1v1 from tastyspleen servers? dont be discouraged, playing dial up is a huge disadvantage, but look at people like daelmun who ping avg. 150. Dael is an amazing player and keeps getting EVEN better all the time. It's hard to win games when playing dial up, but if you really practice the stuff dael says then you can get a lot better and actually compete. I played daelmun 2-3 weeks ago and he beat me 2-7, it was actually close until i lagged out and he killed me and got the lead 3-2, that cheap basterd... but anyways what im trying to say is even with the ping disadvantage, if you follow dael's guidelines you can still get lucky and definitely compete. In my case i was really lucky cause i suck.. haha.. but if any dial up players ever need any help get ahold of me and id be glad to help them out.

You people are going to confuse the hell out of newbs....

This is my take on 1v1 after over 7-8 years of playing Quake2, and is part of the reason why I suck at it...

A: You need consistancy, if your not consistant in your moves (Example, Jumps), and make one mistake, its over. (I am never consistant, so that makes me suck, period!)

B:  If you spawn in wrong places, (in example edge), you need to have a quick plan to get out of that bad spawn, or it is over too.  (This happens to me alot, one example of a bad spawn is the one above water near railgun in Edge.)

C: You need to be able to aim (if on LAN and LPB), and be able to predict (if 56k 200 ping or higher).  There is a somewhere inbetween, I am still working on it myself.  Since I do not play Q2 24/7 like I used to, it is impossible for me to get good over night.  Matter of fact, even with practice, no one can get perfect over night, except with aim on LAN.

D:  There are 2 important weapons, thats Rocket and Rail... if you can get good at those, it is a start to domination, but that alone will not make you dominate!

E: Knowing where the next move is, and have good anticipation.  (I am good at this, but my aim and prediction is off, so I mess it up all the time!)

F: Control Mega/Armor/Weapons in maps!  If you can control all these items, which means never let the enemy get those items, you will almost always dominate.

G: Know your sounds, know where your enemy is, by sounds. (I do this well with earphones, but still not perfect at it.)

In conclusion this is what you need to do to be the best 1v1 player.  Know your moves, know how to jump, know counter attacks, and defence (IE Runnning away and knowing when to run, get health/armor then coming back to the fight.) Control the map, do not let the enemy win.  Keep calm, while staying consistant, do not get nervous. (big mistake I make) Remember to use sounds when possible, it helps you locate where your enemy may be. Learn to Predict your enemies next move, and try aiming when possible.  Sometimes you will find a inbetween for aiming and predicting. If you can do all this, and keep consistant with it, you will always dominate in 1v1!
