just finished getting a hand me down desktop. Pentium 4 1.8ghz, 823mb RAM, 20gb Hard-drive, and I threw in my old voodoo 3 so now, It also came installed with win ME which I know is crap but I have so far been able to use without a problem. I plan on playing Quake 2 on this now. What do you think of this setup.

Please, for the sake of all quakekind, get a better video card. You have a Porche 911 with shopping cart wheels on it. Will be a good set up one that is solved . Cheers

Just benchmarked the graphics card and it gets roughly 150fps in Quake 2.

I have a slower cpu (athlon) and less memory, and get 350 fps on Georce fx5900xt. Your gfx card will be a serious bottleneck. Of course, I think it is a waste if you have a superfast expensive rig just to play such an old game.

lol I got this machine for free and dont plan on spending any money on it. All I really play anymore is Quake 2 so I guess that means there is no point in upgrading.

Mine barely does, but it is still a very effective rig for q2.
My q2 comp, at home, is a:
pentium 1.8ghz
1gb Ram
40gb HD
winxp pro sp2
Nvidia Geforce mx440 64mb (super bottleneck!)
w/ an old soundblaster card
I usually like to play at 60fps, so the weak gfx card doesn't bother me much.
It runs EGL pretty well, even with all the decals and effects and gore, but it does tend to get a bit warm.
When I'm actually serious about playing, and not just dicking around, I use R1q2, for the slightly increased networking performance and the much lighter load on the graphix card.
Save your upgrade dough until you've got enough for a brand-spankin-new rig that will run ET:Quake Wars, or in a year you'll be hating yourself!

I dont even know that I want to get enemy territory. Ive played these new games and they all seem like crap to me. I love the old school titles which is why I dont need to plunk down for a new rig.

Yeah, its funny. I have upgraded my pc every 6 months for many years and bought hundreds of games, 90% of which I played for 5 minutes and then uninstalled. About 4 months ago I returned to Q2 and havent used my pc for anything else since. Oh the money I could have saved

It's not difficult to find GeForce 6200 and even 6600 for under or around $50 shipped these days. That's an affordable and still significant short term upgrade.
