It's not difficult to find GeForce 6200 and even 6600 for under or around $50 shipped these days.  That's an affordable and still significant short term upgrade.

I can vouch for the GeForce 6200 256mb AGP card, had it a few weeks now, works great! runs Q2 flawlessly, also runs Q4 and Doom3 quite well too.  and yes, for me was a short term upgrade till i can afford a new machine.

FragUplenty, it's definitely worth it to upgrade that video card.  If you get a new card make sure you find out if your computer supports AGP, PCI, or PCI express and buy a compatible card.  Otherwise you won't be able to plug it in.
