Future tourney ideas...

Well, always gonna be hard to make experienced duellers and less experienced duellers play at an even playingfield, so having divisions based on skill would be a good idea if it could be done in an easy way and not requiring too much extra effort from the admins running it.

A way would of course to have some sort of ranking based on a FFA round, making the FFA-groups consisting of 6 players roughly ranked by admins so not one group would be much stronger than the others. Top 2 went to the playoff for "pros" the 3rd and 4th placing went to the playoff for "sport" and the lowest 2 would go on to the playoff for "novice". Another way is to have a groupstage round instead of the FFA round, with 6 players each and they all play eachother once on q2dm1 to determine the average duelling skill. q2dm1 would be a good map for quick ranking games like that. Then make different brackets based on the final standing.

The whole points idea is well intended, but not sure how well it works. I mean, it's not really any more fun taking a beating 30-1 even if you get 3 points for that kill. And besides, the idea for rewarding frags in a tourney like that is not really something I would recommend. Frags are so random in duels, some games you can get 5 lucky frags on an overly confident opponent that doesn't try very hard cause you're not giving him a challenge at all (losing 30-5), while someone who is way better than you may not get a frag at all since the opponent is trying much harder (losing 7-0), and you'll be rewarded a 10-15 points advantage over that opponent who is better than you. Think it will be really messed up and based more on randomness than actual  skill, but that's just my view. The point-based system where you give different amount of points depending on skill-level of the opponent is better at least. But it would be very hard keeping track of points and players (who is a threat and who is not) and the outcome of the group I would think, hard staying motivated in a tourney like that where points are handed out according to complicated rules. But I would prefer the separate brackets over the "everyone competing in the same pool but not on the same terms". The best players should be at the top regardless system, doesn't look good when the best players are left out of the top cause some not so skilled players were given additional points. After all it is a competition.

Anyway, the skill separated brackets could work, allthough laurelin had some valid points in a previous thread. I personally think a good working double elimination playoff system is preferable. If people don't like the blowoutgames in the first rounds, thats gonna be hard to avoid. A good initial ranking of the players in a double elim tourney would cause some blowout games in the first round, but once the losers get to the loser bracket they will get opponents that are of lower skill and games would even out. Same would happen in the winners bracket. And if people really want to play we could have some sort of loserbracket-loser's playoff, meaning the ones getting beaten out of the tourney would get to play in their own playoff. But seriously doubt the motivation would be there to let that sort of playoff be running on its own without some seriously dedicated admins.

Anyway, just rambling

If you want a lot of games for everyone: go for some groupstage sort of tourney
If you want a lot of games for most: go for double elimination playoff
If you want a fast and easy to handle tourney: go with single elimination playoff
If you want even games: go for a skill separated bracket system

In any case adrenal1ne will whine and naymlis will win.

im all for double elimination tournament, personally i think those make for the best tournies, coming from a fightin game community, all we do are double elimination tourneys, and they work perfectly for that game genre, however seeing as we cant just get all the q2 players in a server for a few hours to finish a tourney, its less convenient to do an online fps double elimination tourney, but i still think we should run one, we may just have to reduce the cap of the tourney, and that way they wouldnt run for as long and we could have tourneys more often, a series of 16 player double elimination tourneys would be cool, maybe these 16 player tourneys could just be considered qualifiers for an even bigger tourney, lol maybe thats silly we might end up with another 64 player tourney, but becuase they run so quick they may seem more efficient and faster for the players involved?
