Actually, in Christian theology, man's distance from God is caused by man's sin against God's law, (original sin), not God's lack of love for Man. This is when God had one law: "Don't eat this." Later becoming Ten Commandments since man proved incapable of following even one simple law. Since man couldn't follow ten laws from an all-powerful God, He had to send prophets to His "chosen people" to try to keep them on the right track to so they might somehow "keep the commandments". Since man was incapable of following ten simple rules for life, he has written innumerable laws for himself, created by career criminals in establishments called "legislatures". - But I digress.

Redemption is paid by God as man (in Jesus) so that man can come back to God. It is only man's denial of redemption (Christ) that can keep man from dwelling with God as he did in the garden. The purpose of the creation of man was so that man could freely choose to be one with God as opposed to all the rest of Creation (including the Angels) who have no choice. (Why this experiment has failed is a topic for another day.)

Of course it was all Eve's fault who bade Adam to eat of the forbidden fruit and Adam who blamed Eve and Eve blamed the serpent (Satan, an angel created by God and who refused to worship Man as God's ultimate creation). Original Sin is the Sin of Pride, the pride than man could be as-God and rule over creation. Of couse this is the promise supposedly made by God to man in the New Testament.

This is the pay-off promised by evangelists today, that everything becomes sweetness and light if one merely accepts their precepts and all one needs to do is send money to the likes of Pat Robertson, Jerry Fall-well, and Joel Osteen. (Notice that you must make your checks payable to them, not to any church as such, for full effect.)

If you guys are going to discuss man's suffering and testing you need to learn your theology first.

You really need to learn to spell "Satan" too.

Indeed. I also hear a similar variation with inverted phrasing on the first half: If God doesn't exist and you do believe, you haven't lost anything. But if God exists and you don't believe you have lost everything.

Either way it boils down to Pascal's Wager
Pascal's Wager... which, aside from embodying the logical fallacy false dilemma, fails in several other ways as well.

Some problems with the "Wager":

1. It assumes the existence of a benevolent god who rewards belief and punishes disbelief. But many faiths only recognize the worship of a specific god, in a specific way. (cf. Pope John Paul II's statement that non-Catholics have "no means of salvation.") So it doesn't just come down to "belief = saved, unbelief = not_saved". You must also have chosen to worship the correct god in the correct manner. As the following chart reminds us, this reduces your chances considerably:

2. The "wager" assumes there are no negative consequences to belief. But history gives examples of many such possible negative consequences, including islamic suicide bombings, catholic vs. protestant terrorism in northern ireland, the spanish inquisition, anti-Semitism fueled by religious dogma, and, the current Pope condeming the provision and teaching of the use of contraceptives in the middle of an AIDS epidemic in Africa.

3. The wager assumes it is a safe bet that god would reward even the most dumb forms of nonthinking belief, over honest skepticism. Maybe? But if god does exist, why should we assume it is a being of such a petty nature? Imagine doing a copy+paste of our current universe, and installing yourself in the position of 'god' in the copy-universe. You've got ultimate power over everything. 100,000,000,000 galaxies, over 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars... Do you really care what a few microbes milling about on some backwater planet believe or don't believe about your existence? The concept is prima facie absurd, and presumably could only have been invented by a bronze age culture who still thought the earth was the center of the universe.
