If both of your aiming is that bad, it might end with a timelimit 0-0 tie  ;D

Johnny your a sandbagger, I know your aim is better than you say.  I have felt the wrath of your aim  :o

Also, don't age, don't get any older, getting older will slow down your reflexes, and hinder your ability to aim.  It'll also make your skin wrinkly and do lots of other unpleasant things.  So above all else stay young if you are now, and if you're not, then I'm afraid you're doomed.

Hey! Us oldsters are people too.... :)

Something I've not seen mention, and it really is minor. I found long ago that my shots were not truly aligned with my crosshair and had to adjust it with:

set gun_x "-3"
set gun_y "0"
set gun_z "3"

This centered my shots horizontaly and just a hair low, which is what I wanted.

Of course this has nothing to do with not being able to hit the inside of a barn.  :)

With the rail there are three ways to aim (that I know of):

1) Tripwire - just position the crosshair where you know (or hope) someone will appear and wait without moving the mouse.
2) Flick rail - a reactive shot where you flick the wrist to shoot someone not in front of you.
3) Strafe rail - a bit like tripwire but where the aim is slightly off and you strafe rather than move the mouse to adjust it.

You can to some extent combine all three.

The only way to get better with this gun is to practise with it, a lot. Get to the point where you don't have to think about aiming. To do this I wouldn't recommend Instagib but rather FFA. Force yourself to always use the gun when you have it, even if the situation would warrant other weapons. Go for everything, however unrealistic the shot may seem. Some of them will come off, which increases confidence no end ...

--
Now, IMHO the RL is a much harder weapon to use properly because it is not instant hit i.e. the projectiles take time to get to their destination. In particular, if you are an HPB the blessed LPBs will find it very easy to dodge your rockets.

In general, the rocket launcher is all about leading the target, i.e. shooting where the other player is going not where they are now. If you're lucky you may actually be able to direct the other player where you want them to go by "bracketing" them i.e. firing to both sides of them quickly.

If practicable, the best way to learn to use the RL is by playing a lot of RA2.

--
When it comes to the chaingun and other "hosepipes" the main thing is to have a steady mouse hand - don't jerk. This is probably my weakest area, especially going to the right.

That brings up another thing. Most players have a natural "mouse direction" which they find easier with particular weapons. For me, it is rightwards with the rail and leftwards with the other weapons. This means that if I have the rail I will tend to always try to get the other player on my right. If you can work out which side your opponent favors it can give you an advantage in a "duke out".
