i really dont see the fas group play anything but dm1-8 ..its like you guys have it all scripted! hehe i just dont think i could play them same 8maps over and over and over..and....

some of the new maps are cool yea. some arent.
the thing about servers being hosted on dsl/cable yea i totally agree with that most of them just cannot handle the loads and the routes arent that great with the extra hops that it takes to get through to the home/user/public ip ranges.

Personally, I really don't like the single player maps.  Mainly, because they are just that, "single player" maps.  They were not designed with multiplayer in mind.  There are too many trap areas, where you get a crappy spawn, and are stuck waiting for some elevator forever just to get back to where the action is.  And because this time consuming process of getting back from BFE (yes BFE not the BFG) back to where the action takes place, this seems to encourage people to camp more and get easy frags.  At least this is what I've noticed.

Good point AJ on the extra hops as well hampering playability on a home-based server.

As far as the FAS servers dictating what style of play we will tolerate on our servers is certainly within our choosing.  Yes, I realize we will not be flooded with campers, people with overly-aggressive attitudes, etc., but these are exactly the people we don't want.  It's "easy" to camp, etc., so more people, especially newer players, are inclined to take this route to playing Quake 2, so these days they represent the majority I'd say.  It's the minority that actually have to spend a lot of time playing and developing skills that we prefer to see on FAS servers.  This style of play takes longer to develop, thus we don't see as many of these type players around in general.

Though as far as popularity goes, the Mage server for example, and lately Kansas.net has started to adopt FAS-like policies on their server.  When you connect to Kansas.net, you see "No spawn camping, no cheats, & no disrespect" etc., something along those lines.  As well as Mage is quite a popular server and has tried to enforce this policy for quite some time now.

To be honest, I really only play on xquake.net because I ping well there, like 50-60, which is about as low as it gets for me for FFA DM server.  Besides Tolnep's, and my connection to that server is just hideous, and there's often a bot that plays there, and other various cheaters so it's just not enjoyable.  For me, xquake just has good hardware in it's favor, not so much rules, etc.  I will say that it's nice to have a forum for a server though, this is a nice addition.  The mage server for example has a nice community of players, people I see frequently, and most of them are cool, and we do a lot of chatting at times.

In a real life combat situation, I just can't imagine telling my opponent what the rules are gonna be, nor him telling me.     Of course we are not talking about life-like combat here, but get use to dealing with adverse q2 conditions, it'll make a better player out of you.

Speaking of Mage, anyone remember Nogame? Seen him around lately ?

I've started a project based on the pure 3.21 id code release, called Quake2 Stable Server Project.  The primary focus will be fixing bugs in the 3.21 code, such as things that currently cause the server to crash (like custom maps having a built-in NEXTMAP flag that points to a map that's not on the server.... *crash!!*) etc.

But I'll be adding small optional features as well (always with a priority on stability)... I've added a trivial spawn protect already... It's practically a one-liner.  It won't in any way cause lag.  Maybe we can try this on xquake soon...

I've met him a couple times in real life, he lives in my area.  Haven't talked to him in ages though, and haven't seen him in game either.

Mabie having the players spawn with like a grenade or two could help keep it interesting when you get a crappy respawn on a map and are getting killed constantly because you cant find a weapon in one of those SP maps.

Well like most ppl i hate campers with a passion...however i have learned to over come this hate with fun...yes fun. Heres how:

I collect the names of all the campers in game and the next time i get it...i target the campers only, deploying every method from telefragging them to grenade suicides, to take them out! what do i care if i get killed in the process its part of the fun...the main objective is to kill the camper!

Wow! i sound like a drill sergent....i should start my own game based on something like this

I agree,  I usually try to take out the campers if I'm doing crappy generally.
 
But I like hugging rocket campers.

mage eliminates campers by kicking then banning them if the keep it up, their motd states the rules.  i still consider the warehouse the best server ever, but thats just me...

dm8 happens to be my favorite map for ffa games involving high numbers, the long hallways allow for many strafe bunny hops giving u a lot of speed, and they are excellent for good railers.  the only thing it lacks would maybe be jumps, but there are some with strategic value.   there are also very few low traffic areas.

I like q2dm8 also its the only dm besides q2dm1 that I like and play on a regular basis.Those long hallways and high places do make for excellent rail action!
