EGL all the way!!

The graphics are SOOO much better.  The water looks amazing and the grenades smoke, rockets are flaming!  Bullets make marks on the walls and so does rail gun.
Its just way better looking over all.  :bananaw00t:

To address some misconceptions :).

R1Q2 demos are not incompatible as of almost a year ago.

The physics are not altered by the new netcode, only by cl_async 1.

Jay's reply was deleted because it was in a 3 month old thread about the mailing list which is hardly the place to discuss FreeBSD builds.

Some ppl are just too stupid to use the r1q2 updater once in a while - and then wanna use the protocol changes as an incompatibility issue for recording demos.  :lolsign:

About the clients...

R1Q2 is the most innovative q2 client that has seen the light. Aprq2 currently seems to me the most featurerich client.
R1Q2 seems faster than AprQ2. Obvious.

And as for my part, I use AprQ2 since it has R1Q2 features, some eyecandy (optional), and offers a nice Linux support as well.

I propose people to use R1Q2 or AprQ2.

About Quetoo.. I proposed Jay Dolan to implement R1Q2 protocol 35 which he denied. Sure, it's his project. But I don't see any light for Quetoo in the multiplayer world then. Stripping Quake2 (Quetoo) down was a good idea - but there's no real innovation yet.

I can't propose Quetoo to AQ2 players yet.

Note: my humble opinion.

I propose you jump off a bridge.

Just because you emailed me with a (rather large) feature request without knowing the project at all does /not/ mean I'm obligated to implement it or even entertain the idea -- just as you'll surely disregard my joke above (altho benefits of each could be argued).  The Quetoo source is freely available.  Please, download it, hack on it, and implement protocol 35 yourself if you want it so badly.

But if you chose to idly complain, which you will, your cries will likely fall on deaf ears.  And as you're surely the authoritative figure players seek out when choosing a client or server, your support for the Quetoo project will be sorely missed.

 :LAME:

R1CH, you're a generally nice guy, a brilliant programmer, and you certainly know the Quake2 engine better than.. anyone.  That said, I do not feel that any of my previous comments were inaccurate or out of line.

Btw, performance gains in excess of 48% are not obtained by simply commenting out blocks of code.  Several core parts of the renderer had to be refactored to yield the kinds of speed increases people are seeing with Quetoo.  The ALSA sound driver I wrote for Quetoo has also found it's way into Icculus and Alien Arena.  I'm sorry if you do not find those innovative.

Regardless of how you feel about them, the fact is that they are wrong. Please examine the code before making such claims in the future.

They were not [entirely] wrong, altho at least misworded.  The facts are:

1) You've produced a wonderful engine with some truly impressive features.
2) At times, your engine is incompatible with stock Quake2, altho it claims to be backwards compatible in the opening paragraph on the project homepage.
3) You delete helpful posts to your forum if they make mention of another engine.
4) You started this thread to massage your own ego.
5) You don't take compliments well, at all.

Reflex, ya man I want to say something, just not sure what the hell is going on here...  :exqueezeme:

4) You started this thread to massage your own ego.

Not sure where the bad blood is coming from, I think it's great we have active development on any q2 engines at all!  Active development on more than one engine is more than anyone could reasonably hope for.

I didn't get a sense of bias or subterfuge or hidden motives from this thread.

If the server log files contained the version string from every client connecting (I don't think that's in the logs) I'd be happy to create a graph or table showing which various clients are in use on our servers.

I've been overusing my python quote about "This is supposed to be a happy occasion, let's not bicker and argue about who killed who" a lot lately... But I am using it again, damn it!!   :evilalien:

Let's celebrate q2 client development, it's great that we have choices.

Regards,
