Does this client contain 3DNow enhancements yet?  If not, or if unknown, does a formal list of fixes come with the executable (update text)?  I'm only interested in it if everything is fixed and improvements from most/all other clients are included, as I'm giving up performance with the AMD build.

i suggest people update again, as a bug in this version prevented joining non r1q2 servers.

R1Q2 supports SSE/SSE2 for some fpu math routines, although I really doubt you're seeing any performance benefits from a 3dNow executable that was built who knows how many years ago (and not to mention likely full of security holes).

The AMD build gave recordable benefits over the standard build before the source code was released.  SSE was used by AMD, but I thought SSE2 became more proprietary after the whole Intel-AMD dispute concerning special instructions.  Anyway, with my HDD issues (had to re-install Quake 2 to my system drive just to get on a server and inform people) performance isn't a significant issue right now, but neither is playing.  Oh, well.

Would be nice to see one executable with all the benefits of Holy Water, Q2ACE, Q2Advanced, NoCheat, R1Q2, Q2E and so on with all the bugs fixed.  Come on, you guys, get it together! :please:

r1ch, i would assume the see/see2 capability's of the processor are checked at runtime and then the routines are used correct? i use an Athlon 64 which contains almost ALL instruction sets for both Intel and AMD with the exception of SSE3 which is bearly used, it would be fun to see which optetrmiserns give the biggest boost in performance, and Ax2Grind anti-cheats are useless these days, why spend weeks creating something that's going to get HACKED TO SHIT in a few days? i'm really grateful we have r1ch and manic making such great clients such as r1q2 and AprQ2. its really a pitty people ask for the world and expect everything, i admit to that myself :P people dont say thank you enough as its these people who help keep this great game alive.

Have you donated to r1ch via Paypal?  Have you ever paid for any of the free work engine maintainers have done for you?  Have you ever helped out any of their projects in any capacity?

r1q2, aprq2, ..the source for each is freely available.  If you think they are lacking, grab a text editor and help out, or stfu.

Correct.

Also, an anticheat isn't necessarily impossible, as long as it is kept up to date (NoCheat worked for a surprisingly long time given how infrequently updates were released) it should be possible to either stay one step ahead of cheaters, or on-par with them for detection and subsequent banning.

R1q2 is pretty popular, we could setup a paypal or similar donation system to help fund an anti-cheat effort.

i would definitely help out rich if he pursues the creation of an anticheat prog...

seriously, the use of hacks at our server has caused nothing but headaches and its sad that nothing can really be done about it :(

q2 is really in need of help

How about a fully fixed executable with a Punkbuster-style updating system that requires an account with Rich's site.  You can download a safe and even adapted version but can't receive anti-cheat updates without an account.  If you put the price at a very low level and most people join it's possible to amass enough to make a somewhat reasonable salary.

If someone wants to cheat badly enough [and knows anything about programming], they will cheat.  If this is a problem for you, play with your friends.  Slap a password on your server if you must.  Personally, I think there are other areas (security, performance, visuals, better platform and hardware support, and documentation*) where development efforts would be better spent.

*I truly believe that the vast majority of features, enhancements, fixes, tweaks, and conveniences in modern engine ports go largely undiscovered due to a lack of accessible documentation.
